Ethiopian Airlines Soars: Major Domestic & Tourism Push Unveiled

Ethiopian Airlines Group has announced a comprehensive and ambitious expansion strategy designed to significantly enhance its domestic connectivity and solidify its position as a leading tourism facilitator in Africa. CEO Mesfin Tasew unveiled plans to add five new domestic destinations within the next six months, increasing the airline's domestic reach from 21 to 26 locations. The airports for these new destinations are currently under construction in Yabelo, Gore Metu, Mizan Aman, Debre Markos, and Negele Borena, marking a substantial 23.8% increase in domestic locations.
A key aspect of this strategic development is the airline's focused investment in tourism-supporting infrastructure. This includes the acquisition of specialized aircraft tailored for tourism operations. Ethiopian Airlines has ordered two De Havilland Canada Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, which boast amphibious capabilities, allowing them to land on both conventional runways and water surfaces. The first of these specialized planes is slated for delivery in October, with the second following in January 2026. These aircraft are expected to open up previously inaccessible tourist destinations, including lakeside resorts and remote national parks, while also supporting diverse operations such as passenger transport, air ambulance services, cargo, and charter flights. Further demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility, the airline has also confirmed an order for electric planes, anticipated to arrive in 2026, aligning with growing global demand for sustainable travel.
Beyond aviation, Ethiopian Airlines is vertically integrating hospitality services to create a seamless travel ecosystem. The Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, a part of the group, has assumed management of four countryside lodges developed under the government's “Gebeta Le Hager” initiative. These lodges—Chebera Churchura Elephant Paw Lodge, Halala Kella Lodge, Gorgora Ecolodge, and Wonchi Eco Lodge—will operate under unified service standards, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience for tourists. This integration allows for seamless connections between Bole International Airport, the main Skylight Hotel, and these remote eco-lodges, providing a comprehensive tourism package that extends beyond traditional airline services.
This multi-faceted expansion aligns with Ethiopian Airlines' long-term vision of supporting national tourism and strengthening its financial performance. The timing coincides with Ethiopia's impressive tourism growth, which saw 1,148,050 tourist arrivals in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, generating USD 4.3 billion in revenue, a 40% increase over five years. With government targets aiming for 2 million annual visitors by 2025, the airline's strategic investments are poised to capture a significant share of this growing market.
Ethiopian Airlines, which currently holds 39% of Africa's passenger market and 35% of the continent's cargo operations, transporting 19 million passengers annually across more than 150 destinations, is leveraging its market dominance to pioneer new service models. This expansion serves as a replicable blueprint for other African carriers and destinations seeking to maximize their tourism potential through strategic infrastructure investments, embracing eco-tourism, and integrating services across the aviation and hospitality sectors. The emphasis on sustainable and experiential travel reflects evolving traveler preferences, positioning Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopia at the forefront of the continent's evolving travel industry.
