Ethiopian Airlines Expands European Reach with New Lyon Route

Ethiopian Airlines has officially inaugurated a new direct passenger service to Lyon, France, marking a significant expansion of its European network and reinforcing the enduring partnership between Ethiopia and France. The launch ceremony was a notable event, attended by key figures including Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew, French Ambassador to Ethiopia Alexis Lamek, and several senior executives from the airline, underscoring the strategic importance of this new route.

Speaking at the inaugural event, CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted that Lyon is now Ethiopian Airlines' 23rd destination within Europe and its third in France, complementing existing services to Paris and Marseille. He emphasized that this new route is a clear demonstration of the airline's unwavering commitment to expanding its global reach, while simultaneously deepening the bilateral ties that exist between Ethiopia and France. Mesfin further stated that the introduction of the Lyon route is expected to significantly strengthen the relationship between the two nations, fostering greater opportunities across various sectors such as trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange.

In line with its ambitious global expansion strategy, the CEO also revealed Ethiopian Airlines' plans to launch five additional international destinations by the end of 2026. Mesfin reiterated the airline's role as Africa's leading carrier, affirming its continued dedication to investing in initiatives that support the economic integration of the African continent and enhance connectivity between Africa and the rest of the world. Furthermore, he extended an invitation to French companies, encouraging their participation in the development of the Bishoftu International Airport project, which he described as a substantial opportunity for both investment and long-term cooperation.

French Ambassador to Ethiopia Alexis Lamek warmly welcomed the inauguration of the new service to Lyon, recognizing it as a reflection of the steadily growing partnership between Ethiopia and France. The ambassador expressed his pleasure at the continuous expansion of the relationship between the two countries, noting that the new direct service will undoubtedly further strengthen economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties. The inaugural flight to Lyon, recognized as one of France's prominent economic and cultural hubs, was scheduled to depart on a Thursday, initiating regular passenger services.

This strategic new route significantly consolidates Ethiopian Airlines' esteemed position as Africa's largest carrier. It also plays a crucial role in advancing the airline's broader strategy to enhance Addis Ababa's status as a major international aviation hub, effectively linking the African continent with Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
