Eric Chelle Unveils Super Eagles Battle Plan for Egypt Clash Amidst Bassey Ban, Osimhen Doubts

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to clash with Egypt in the third-place play-off of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, aiming to secure a record-extending ninth bronze medal. This crucial match in Casablanca, inside the Stade Mohamed V, on Saturday follows both teams' disappointing semi-final exits; Nigeria fell to hosts Morocco, while Egypt was narrowly defeated by Senegal. For Nigeria's head coach Eric Chelle, the challenge extends beyond lifting team morale to navigating significant selection dilemmas and the physical toll of the tournament.
A major blow for the Super Eagles is the suspension of influential defender Calvin Bassey, who accumulated his second yellow card during the semi-final. Chelle, who considers Bassey the tournament's best centre-back and wants him to be a top-three global defender, admitted his absence is a significant loss. Slavia Prague's Igoh Ogbu and Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem are the primary contenders to step into Bassey's central defensive role alongside Semi Ajayi. Furthermore, star striker Victor Osimhen remains a doubt, nursing an ankle injury sustained against Morocco. Should Osimhen not pass a late fitness test, Paul Onuachu is poised to lead the attack, with youngster Salim Fago Lawal available from the bench. Midfield captain Wilfred Ndidi, however, is expected to return to the starting lineup after serving his own suspension, providing a crucial boost in balance and control.
Coach Chelle openly acknowledged the physical demands on his squad, stating, "You cannot play two games in 48 hours with the same intensity. You have to wait 72 hours, this is not me who says this. It is the doctor... The players are tired, played the whole tournament, played 48 hours ago." Despite the fatigue and limited recovery time, Chelle has ruled out wholesale changes, emphasizing his philosophy: "My philosophy will be, we want to win this game. So will put the best players for this game." He views the bronze medal as a vital recompense for the team's efforts and a positive foundation for future endeavors.
Prior to their semi-final heartbreak, Nigeria had been one of the tournament's most convincing teams, winning five consecutive matches and scoring a competition-high 14 goals. This impressive run had revitalized national belief after the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and the pain of losing the 2023 AFCON final. Chelle admitted the semi-final was a "sobering experience" but reiterated his players' determination to respond effectively against Egypt.
The encounter marks the 20th meeting between Nigeria and Egypt, with Nigeria holding a historical advantage of nine wins to Egypt's five. However, Egypt claimed the most recent fixture, a 2-1 victory in Cairo before the tournament, which will serve as additional motivation for the Super Eagles. Egypt, a seven-time African champion, represents formidable opposition known for their team spirit, solidarity, and individual quality.
Looking beyond the tournament, Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has strongly advocated for the retention of Eric Chelle as head coach. Ndidi praised Chelle as a "wonderful manager" and stressed the importance of continuity for the team's future success, especially with upcoming competitions. Despite initial doubts surrounding his capabilities after failing to secure World Cup qualification, Chelle's performance at AFCON 2025 has significantly strengthened his position, making a contract extension likely before his current two-year deal expires next January. The match will kick off at 5 pm Nigerian time.
