Emirates Redefines Luxury: World-First Electric Premium Economy Seat Debuts with Ultimate Privacy

Emirates has unveiled a groundbreaking enhancement to its Premium Economy offering, introducing what it proudly calls the world's first electrically powered Premium Economy seat, complete with a full-height adjustable privacy screen. This innovative product, making its debut on the airline's newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft, is set to redefine the mid-tier long-haul travel experience by offering unprecedented levels of comfort and personal space. This significant investment marks Emirates' most ambitious step yet in solidifying its Premium Economy cabin as a preferred choice for discerning travellers, particularly within the African market, who seek enhanced value without compromising on quality for their long-haul journeys to Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond.

The new A350 Premium Economy cabin is thoughtfully designed with 28 seats arranged in a spacious 2-3-2 configuration. Each seat is generously proportioned, measuring 20 inches wide and providing up to 39 inches of pitch. A key comfort feature is the seat's ability to recline into a cradle position, meticulously engineered to ensure it does not infringe upon the space of the passenger seated behind. This design eliminates common disputes over seat-back intrusion, allowing guests to relax and rest undisturbed during lengthy flights.

The standout innovation, however, is the electrically operated privacy divider. Emirates has confirmed this feature to be the first of its kind globally within any Premium Economy cabin. Passengers can effortlessly raise, lower, and securely lock the full-height partition with a simple touch of a button, effectively creating a private cocoon. This personal enclosure is perfectly suited for various activities, whether working, dining, or sleeping in an environment of serene peace and quiet. Furthermore, this marks Emirates' first fully electrically powered Premium Economy seat, offering passengers intuitive control through an integrated Passenger Control Unit. This unit allows travellers to seamlessly transition between preset configurations such as a dedicated lounge mode for relaxation and a meal mode for dining, thereby tailoring the seat's position to perfectly match every stage of their journey.

Beyond the core seat design, comfort is further augmented by several thoughtful additions. The U-Dream headrest, developed in collaboration with Safran Seats, features adjustable leather wings that deliver precise neck and head support. For those longer sectors, often experienced by African travellers connecting through Dubai, a manually deployed leather footrest is included to help mitigate leg fatigue, ensuring a more refreshed arrival.

Connectivity has also received a substantial overhaul to meet modern traveller demands. For the first time, Premium Economy passengers will benefit from wireless charging capabilities. Complementing this are readily accessible USB-C ports and a cleverly integrated tray-table phone holder, which ingeniously transforms a smartphone into a convenient second screen for multitasking or extended entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, the award-winning ice system is delivered through a high-resolution 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen. Enhancing the inflight experience, the A350 also introduces expanded external camera views, offering both left and right perspectives in addition to the established forward and downward angles.

Dining remains a hallmark of Emirates' service, and the Premium Economy experience is no exception. Passengers can savor regionally inspired menus, elegantly presented on Royal Doulton fine china, accompanied by crisp linen napkins and premium Robert Welch stainless-steel cutlery. The beverage selection is equally impressive, highlighted by the exclusive Chandon Vintage Brut 2021 Australian sparkling wine. New wine selections, such as Chablis Premier Cru Jean-Marc Brocard 2024 and La Parde de Haut-Bailly 2014, are slated to roll out from September. Adding a touch of local sophistication, Emirates plans to introduce Wiston Estate Brut NV as its inaugural English sparkling wine, to be served exclusively in Premium Economy on UK routes starting in October. The airline proudly notes its significant investment, exceeding US$1 billion, in its wine portfolio since 2006.

Long-haul passengers are also treated to thoughtfully designed, reusable amenity kits. Developed in partnership with United for Wildlife, these kits are crafted from bio-based materials, including innovative cactus leather alternatives, and feature designs honoring endangered species. For the first time within Premium Economy, these kits include plant-powered Aveda skincare products, alongside essential items such as socks, eyeshades, earplugs, and dental necessities.

Since its initial launch in 2022, Emirates' Premium Economy product has seen considerable expansion, now available across all A350 routes. Its commitment to excellence has been recognized with multiple industry accolades, including the prestigious Best Premium Economy Class at the Business Traveller Middle East Awards in both 2024 and 2025. For African travel professionals and trade partners, this latest innovation further strengthens Emirates' position as a premium partner of choice, opening new avenues to upsell discerning clients who prioritize privacy, comfort, and unparalleled quality throughout their international journeys.
