EFCC denies BBC Pidgin report on reason for VeryDarkMan's arrest
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed a report by BBC News Pidgin regarding the arrest of controversial social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
BBC News Pidgin had earlier quoted EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale as confirming that VDM was arrested following “multiple petitions” against him.
According to the outlet, Oyewale also said, “We will release him once he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible. We are law-abiding.”
However, the EFCC has come out to debunk the report. In a post shared on its official social media pages on Monday evening, the anti-graft agency labelled the report as “fake news,” sharing a screenshot of the BBC article and another similar post without offering further clarification.
VeryDarkMan was reportedly picked up last Friday shortly after visiting a GTBank branch in the Area 3 district of Garki, Abuja.
His arrest has sparked outrage on social media, with many accusing the bank of collaborating with the EFCC to facilitate the arrest.
