Ashanti region

Chaos erupted at the just-ended Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region as violence broke out when the sorting of ballots began. A group of unidentified thugs stormed the election centre, destroying ballot boxes and halting the sorting and counting process.

The disturbance is alleged to have been triggered by the unexpected loss of National Democratic Congress candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was widely tipped to win.

The situation has led to a temporary suspension of proceedings as security personnel struggled to restore order.
