East Nagpur residents on a slippery trail as slush, debris remain on roads

Nagpur: Rains took a break on Thursday, and there was no major waterlogging on roads, but commuting through some of East Nagpur areas like Pardi, Surya Nagar, Navin Nagar and Central Avenue was still a messy and risky affair.

TOI spotted thick layers of mud, silt and debris scattered on roads in these areas. The Bhandara Road underpass remains one of the most severely impacted spots — submerged and shut for traffic. With key underpasses across East Nagpur rendered unusable, traffic is being rerouted to inner lanes and service roads that have turned slippery. Riders and pedestrians are forced to navigate through sticky mud, with many vehicles either skidding or getting stuck in the slush.Earlier this week, waist-high water in areas like Surya Nagar, Navin Nagar, and Durga Nagar level necessitated rescue efforts by the fire department. Though the water has receded now, it has left behind a trail of cracked surfaces and patches of hardened slush. In Navkanya Nagar, residents said civic workers haven't cleared the muck. "I opened my shop today after three days," said Mohsin Sheikh, a butcher in the area, adding, "Earlier, there was no way I could reach the shop.

The entire stretch was flooded and slushy."Other residents like Deepa Kumari pointed out that most footpaths and intersections remained covered in silt, making even short commutes uncomfortable. "Every year we are left to deal with the slush," said Md Qasim, a local resident. Only the underpass near Prajapati Nagar Metro station remained functional, as NHAI deployed pumps to dewater it. With other routes blocked or damaged, the underpass has emerged as the main access point for many commuters. The situation has once again exposed the lack of a robust storm water drainage system in the city. Despite regular flooding every monsoon, there has been little visible improvement in flood preparedness or post-rain clean-up mechanisms. With more rains likely in the coming days, residents fear the situation could worsen. Their appeal: fix roads, clear debris and take proactive measures.
