Duran Duran's Glastonbury Demand: Headlining or Nothing!

Duran Duran, the iconic British new wave legends, continue to uphold their high standards, decades after dominating the music scene in the first half of the 1980s. Celebrated as the most popular band globally during that era, they amassed a dedicated fanbase and a string of chart-topping hits. Their illustrious career is marked by numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, a Brit Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Despite their extensive list of achievements, one major U.K. festival appearance remains unticked: a headline slot at Glastonbury. Frontman Simon Le Bon expressed a keen interest in performing at the renowned festival, but with a strict condition: “We want the right slot,” he told The Times of London, asserting, “We shouldn’t be below anybody on the bill.” Le Bon, who was recognized as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles in 2024 for his contributions to music and charity, emphasized their position: “so, we’ll hold out because we’re a headline act — that’s all there is to it.” The band confirmed they had been offered a slot previously but rejected it, with Le Bon stating, “not in a disco tent at 3pm, which is what we were offered.”
In the same feature story in The Times, bandmates Nick Rhodes, the founding keyboardist, and John Taylor delved into topics such as fame, past drug experiences, and the evolving landscape of technology. Rhodes notably commented on the inevitability of artificial intelligence, stating, “Anyone who thinks AI will go away is certifiably insane.” Given Glastonbury’s planned fallow year in 2026, the next potential opportunity for Duran Duran to grace the festival’s main stage would be in 2027.
However, fans will have a chance to see Duran Duran in a significant outdoor setting this summer. The band is scheduled to headline BST Hyde Park on July 5, returning to the site of their triumphant 2022 concert, which drew an estimated 70,000 fans. Musically, Duran Duran recently unveiled “Free to Love,” a neo-disco collaboration with their longtime producer and friend Nile Rodgers. This track marks their first new music since their 16th studio album, *Danse Macabre*, which was released in 2023 and peaked at No. 4 on the Official U.K. Chart. The band recently concluded a residency in Las Vegas and is preparing for a series of U.K. and Continental European shows, commencing on June 19 at Denmark’s Heartland Festival.
