Drama Unfolds: Arsenal's Controversial Win Over Wolves Sparks Arteta Outburst, Arokodare's 'Hurtful' Goal

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Tolu Arokodare etched his name into the club's history by becoming the first Nigerian to score a Premier League goal for the Wolves, a significant achievement that came amidst a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. The 25-year-old forward's maiden top-flight strike on Saturday served as a powerful response to his omission from Nigeria's final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, despite previously being named in the provisional list.
The match at the Emirates Stadium was a rollercoaster of emotions. Arsenal initially took the lead in the 70th minute through a fortunate deflection off Wolves' goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, following a Bukayo Saka corner. This breakthrough felt somewhat undeserved given Wolves' resilient defensive display against the league leaders. However, with the clock ticking into the 90th minute, substitute Arokodare, who was introduced in the 79th minute by manager Gary O'Neil, rose highest to power home a late header, briefly restoring parity at 1-1. This clinical finish, described by commentator Andy Townsend as a 'pacy, flat delivery' and a 'clever flick header' that went past David Raya, seemed poised to earn Wolves a crucial point.
Despite Arokodare's historic equalizer, cruel fate intervened in stoppage time. Wolves' hopes were dashed when defender Yerson Mosquera inadvertently turned a cross, again from Bukayo Saka, into his own net, handing Arsenal a 2-1 victory. This late own goal secured three hard-fought points for the title chasers, leaving Wolves with a familiar sense of heartbreak from conceding late in games.
Arokodare's goal settled a long-standing debate regarding the first Nigerian to score for Wolves in the Premier League. While former Nigeria international Seyi Olofinjana enjoyed a successful spell at Molineux between 2004 and 2008, scoring several goals for the club, none of these came in England's top flight. Wolves were competing in the Championship throughout Olofinjana’s tenure, firmly establishing Arokodare's unique place in the club's Premier League history.
Speaking after the match, a visibly disappointed Arokodare expressed the hurt of the defeat, a feeling exacerbated by his team's recurring struggles in the dying moments of games. "It is hurtful," the striker admitted. "It has been happening to us all season. We played the whole game so well but at the end we always concede. It is not the first time we have conceded in the last minute; we have to start focused until the final whistle." Despite the heartbreak, he highlighted the positives, noting their strong performance against the 'best team in the league' and calling Arsenal's first goal 'lucky from a corner,' an assessment Bukayo Saka reportedly agreed with.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, despite the dramatic victory, did not hold back in his assessment of his team's performance, labelling it "unacceptable." He expressed frustration over the 'horrible defensive habits' and a 'lapse in concentration' that allowed Wolves back into the contest, stating, "We have a very clear understanding that the margins should have been bigger." Arteta acknowledged the team's resilience but stressed the urgent need for improvement to sustain their title ambitions.
Adding to Arsenal's concerns, right-back Ben White was forced off in the first half with a hamstring injury, replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly. This injury compounds an existing defensive crisis for the Gunners, with Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and Cristhian Mosquera also sidelined. Arteta described the news on White as "bad," linking it to the increased workload placed on the defender due to a lack of other solutions. Despite the loss, Arokodare's historic goal stands as a personal triumph and a significant marker of his arrival on English football's biggest stage.
