DR Congo Secures Crucial AFCON Win Against Benin, Kicking Off Campaign

DR Congo secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D encounter. The decisive goal came in the 16th minute from Théo Bongonda, who finished with his left foot from close range after being set up by Arthur Masuaku. This early advantage for the Leopards was netted at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, in a match that was characterized by frequent stoppages, missed chances, and late pressure. Bongonda, a forward for Spartak Moscow, celebrated his crucial goal with his teammates.
Benin responded with increased attacking intent throughout the match, creating several scoring opportunities through players such as Aiyegun Tosin, Dodo Dokou, and Tamimou Ouorou. Despite sustained periods of pressure, the Beninese side struggled to convert their chances into goals. Early in the second half, DR Congo believed they had doubled their lead when Cédric Bakambu headed home a cross from Nathanael Mbuku. However, the goal was subsequently disallowed for offside following a lengthy VAR review, ensuring Benin remained in contention.
The closing stages of the game were particularly tense, with an announcement of 10 minutes of added time. Benin intensified their efforts in search of an equalizer, with Tosin coming closest in stoppage time, forcing a crucial save from DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Despite frequent interruptions due to injuries and a flurry of yellow cards issued to players from both teams, the Congolese defense remained resolute. Anchored by Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe, the defense held firm, successfully preserving the 1-0 lead to secure the victory.
This hard-earned victory significantly strengthens DR Congo’s position in their AFCON campaign, leaving Benin to lament their numerous missed opportunities in what was a closely contested match. Post-match, Bongonda commented, "The most important thing is that we make our people proud. It was a very difficult match. I didn't really know anything about Benin but they are a really good side, and nobody has won easily so far in the other games. We are used to suffering but what matters is that we got the three points even if the performance was not great." Coach Sebastien Desabre's team, which includes talents like West Ham United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and promising Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki, were semi-finalists at the last Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and are aiming to surpass their 1974 triumph as Zaire. The team also harbors aspirations for the 2026 World Cup, with an upcoming play-off in March against either New Caledonia or Jamaica in Mexico, potentially leading them to Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
