Denmark's Draconian Migrant Policies: A Blueprint or a Warning for the UK?

The Labour Party is currently grappling with internal discord over the potential adoption of Denmark's stringent immigration policies. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has reportedly dispatched officials to Copenhagen to examine the Scandinavian nation's system, which has successfully reduced asylum claims to a 40-year low. However, the proposal has ignited fierce opposition from the party’s left wing, who argue that such measures are "far right" in nature.
Nadia Whittome, a Labour Socialist Campaign Group MP, criticized the model as "undeniably racist," warning against replicating policies that tie welfare and residency to strict conditions. Conversely, Gareth Snell advocated exploring best practices from international counterparts to restore public confidence amid rising small boat arrivals and increasing migration pressures.
In Denmark, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and the Social Democrats have pursued a zero-tolerance approach to asylum since 2019. Their policies include denying benefits to rejected asylum seekers, requiring migrants to contribute financially, and implementing strict integration measures, such as mandatory Danish language acquisition and citizenship testing. The result has been a dramatic 90% drop in asylum applications over the past decade, from 23,330 to just 2,333 last year, starkly contrasted with the UK's 111,100 applications.
The Danish model also enforces strict family reunification rules, bans public burka use, and implements the controversial anti-ghetto law, targeting neighborhoods with high concentrations of non-Western immigrants. Rejected asylum seekers are placed in deportation centers, receiving only meals, while voluntary return schemes offer up to £24,000 for reintegration. Transparency is maintained through published crime statistics, disaggregated by nationality, which has strengthened public support for tougher policies.
Supporters argue that Denmark demonstrates how a centre-left government can implement robust immigration controls without abandoning compassion, balancing deterrence with protection for those genuinely in need. The UK’s Labour Party faces a crucial decision: embrace stricter immigration rules or risk appearing indecisive on a contentious issue that has fueled the rise of parties like Nigel Farage’s Reform Party.
