Defence chief visits Russian minister to strengthen military ties

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, paid a courtesy visit to the Russian Federation’s Minister of Defence, Mr. Andrey Belousov, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Moscow.

According to the Defence spokesman, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the visit was part of Nigeria’s show of solidarity during Russia’s 80th Victory Day Commemoration, honouring the sacrifices of Russian soldiers during World War II.

During the meeting, General Musa reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening military cooperation with the Russian Federation.

He also presented key operational needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces, highlighting areas where Russian support could prove beneficial.

In response, Minister Belousov expressed appreciation for the visit and reiterated Russia’s readiness to support Nigeria under the framework of existing Military-Technical Cooperation agreements.

He further emphasised the importance of ongoing bilateral defence engagements, including the upcoming meetings of the Intergovernmental Working Group and high-level defence officials.
