Deadly Lassa Fever Claims 46 Lives in Taraba, WHO Confirms

Taraba State has been identified as one of the five states in Nigeria grappling with the highest number of confirmed Lassa Fever cases. Within a single year, the state tragically recorded 46 deaths stemming from 100 confirmed cases, highlighting a severe public health challenge. This critical information was disclosed by Halilu Sani Abubakar, the Surveillance Officer for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Taraba State.
Speaking at a vital meeting with Community Health Workers and Media Executives on Community-Led Intervention for Lassa Fever in the Ardo-Kola local government area, Abubakar provided a comprehensive overview of the situation. He reported that approximately 380 cases were suspected across 16 local government areas of the state. Of these, 100 cases were definitively confirmed in only four specific local government areas: Jalingo, Bali, Ardo-Kola, and Gassol. These four areas have been identified as critical "red spots" for the disease, consistently contributing the highest numbers of both suspected and confirmed Lassa Fever cases. Jalingo alone registered the most confirmed cases, followed by Bali, then Ardo-Kola, and Gassol.
Abubakar further elaborated on the severity of the outbreak, noting that the case fatality rate across the state stands at approximately 46% among confirmed cases. He explicitly stated, "Out of 100 cases that we reported and are confirmed to be Lassa fever, 46 of them died, which means, the case fatality rate is very high." He suggested that this high mortality rate is likely linked to delayed reporting of cases, possibly due to a lack of public clarity or ignorance regarding Lassa Fever symptoms and dangers. The core objective of the community-led intervention initiative, as discussed at the meeting, is to educate the populace on the signs, symptoms, and risks of the disease, thereby mitigating the epidemic's spread and impact in Taraba.
Reinforcing these efforts, Dahiru Zakari, who represented the Taraba State Ministry of Health at the event, assured attendees that the state government is actively engaged in robust initiatives aimed at completely eradicating Lassa Fever cases within the state.
