Cyberpunk 2077 Universe Expands with Official Live-Action Movie in the Works!
CD Projekt Red, renowned for The Witcher 3 and the redeemed Cyberpunk 2077, is expanding its futuristic universe with a new film adaptation. A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is officially in early development at Paramount, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached as producer, sparking speculation about its plot and potential cast members.
While Rockstar Games garners significant attention with the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI, another prominent studio, CD Projekt Red, has solidified its reputation with hit titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077. The studio is actively developing The Witcher 4, slated for a 2028 release, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which is expected much later.
Cyberpunk 2077, initially launched as one of the first next-generation titles for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, faced a notoriously troubled release. Its poor state at launch led CD Projekt Red to issue full refunds to players. However, the game has since undergone a remarkable redemption arc over the last few years. This transformation is largely due to numerous quality-of-life updates and the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty DLC, which featured actor Idris Elba. CD Projekt Red also comprehensively reworked Cyberpunk 2077’s skill tree and cyberware abilities, significantly enhancing its replay value and overall playability.
Beyond its gaming endeavors, exciting news has emerged regarding the Cyberpunk universe. It was recently announced that a Cyberpunk 2077 movie is officially in the early stages of development at Paramount. While plot details, creative team, or cast information are currently under wraps, Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce the feature. Speculation is already circulating among fans regarding potential directors and whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand, should the film adapt the game's events.
Alternatively, Paramount could opt for a strategy similar to the Fallout television series, by telling a new story set within the rich Cyberpunk 2077 universe but featuring new characters. With development still in its nascent stages, it remains too early to definitively predict the direction or personnel involved in bringing the Cyberpunk world to the big screen. Further updates on this anticipated adaptation are expected from Collider.
