Cult Classic Reimagined: Zack Snyder to Helm John Carpenter Sci-Fi Remake!

John Carpenter's directorial work from the 1970s and 1980s is widely celebrated as one of the finest collections by a 20th-century director, despite not all of his films being immediate financial or critical triumphs. This rich legacy has frequently served as source material for prequels, remakes, and sequels, with iconic titles such as Halloween, The Thing, and Assault on Precinct 13 inspiring new iterations in the 21st century. Now, reports indicate that acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder is set to helm a remake of one of Carpenter's "crown jewels," the 1981 science fiction action film, Escape From New York.

Zack Snyder, who made his directorial debut with a remake of George Romero's horror classic Dawn of the Dead, has garnered a fervent following through his work on DC films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. More recently, he directed the Rebel Moon duology for Netflix, and his upcoming drama, The Last Photograph, is slated for release later this year. Snyder is being tapped to finally move the Escape From New York remake out of "Development Hell," a status it has held for decades.

The journey to remake Escape From New York has seen several directors and actors attached over the years. Previous filmmakers signed on to direct include Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, and Robert Rodriguez. At one point, Gerard Butler was considered for the starring role. Most recently, the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, known for Scream, were set to work on the remake but have since shifted their focus to Universal's resurrection of The Mummy franchise.

The original Escape From New York, released on May 23, 1981, and running 99 minutes, was directed by John Carpenter and co-written with Nick Castle. It stars Kurt Russell as the iconic one-eyed soldier of fortune, Snake Plissken. The film is set in a dystopian 1997, where Manhattan Island has been transformed into a maximum-security prison. Plissken is tasked by the US government to rescue the President (played by Donald Pleasence) after Air Force One crashes into the city. To ensure his compliance, Snake is injected with micro-explosives designed to detonate if he fails to retrieve the President by a strict deadline.

During his perilous mission, Snake recruits an unlikely group of allies, including Cabbie (Ernest Borgnine), Brain (Harry Dean Stanton), and Maggie (Adrienne Barbeau), to navigate the treacherous prison-city and retrieve the President from the clutches of the tyrannical Duke (Isaac Hayes). The film was a critical and commercial success, leading Carpenter himself to direct a sequel, Escape From L.A., in 1996.

Studiocanal, which holds the rights to the original film, is developing the remake. Zack Snyder will produce the new adaptation alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller through their banner, Stone Quarry. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will also produce for The Picture Company, with original director John Carpenter serving as an executive producer, ensuring a connection to the beloved source material. Fans are eager for future updates on this long-awaited project.
