Crisis Unfolds: PDP Suspends National Secretary Anyanwu and Key Figures

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently grappling with a significant internal crisis, which escalated dramatically with the National Working Committee (NWC)'s decision to suspend four prominent party officials. These officials, reportedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, were identified as National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and the Deputy National Legal Adviser. The suspension, announced by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, followed an extensive NWC meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. It took immediate effect and is slated to last for one month, during which a disciplinary review will be conducted.
According to Ologunagba, the NWC’s resolution to suspend the officers and refer them to the Disciplinary Committee for further action was reached after careful deliberation and is in accordance with the party’s constitution. This measure, he stated, aims to reinstate order and discipline within the PDP's ranks. Party sources suggest that the suspended officials, all considered allies of Wike, had increasingly distanced themselves from party meetings and activities in recent months, thereby exacerbating the existing internal rifts within the party.
This latest development unfolds amidst mounting tensions surrounding the PDP’s forthcoming national convention. The convention is scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. However, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a ruling on Friday, ordering the PDP to cease all preparations for the convention. The court's decision was based on the need for internal disputes concerning delegates and leadership to be resolved prior to the convention. In response to the court's directive, Ologunagba confirmed that the PDP intends to appeal the judgment. He emphasized the party's respect for the judiciary but firmly stated that the ruling would not impede its ongoing preparations for the national convention, asserting, “Our preparations for the national convention remain on course.”
