Country Queens Reign: Ella Langley & Lainey Wilson Dominate Song Charts

In a rare and notable occurrence, two female artists, Ella Langley and Lainey Wilson, have simultaneously topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts. This dual achievement, marking a significant moment in country music, highlights the success of women in the genre.

Ella Langley achieved her first No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart with “Choosin’ Texas.” Co-written with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick, and Joybeth Taylor, the track ascended to the top spot on the chart dated December 6. During the November 21-27 tracking week, the song garnered an impressive 13.7 million official U.S. streams, received 11.5 million in radio audience, and sold 8,000 units, according to Luminate. Remarkably, “Choosin’ Texas” reached the pinnacle of the chart in just its sixth week, quickly becoming a career milestone for Langley, who has logged five top 10s on the Hot Country Songs chart since October 2024.

Concurrently, Lainey Wilson secured her fifth No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart with her Lone Star State-themed track, “Somewhere Over Laredo.” This song also jumped from fourth to first place, boasting 28 million in audience, a 22% increase. Wilson co-wrote the track, which ingeniously interpolates the iconic 1939 classic “Over the Rainbow” from *The Wizard of Oz*.

Such a simultaneous command of both charts by solo women is exceptionally rare. Since the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts began coexisting in October 2012, this has only occurred six times. The first instance was in October 2012, when Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” led Country Airplay for two weeks, while Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” topped Hot Country Songs. The phenomenon didn’t repeat until September 2016, with Kelsea Ballerini’s “Peter Pan” ruling both charts for a week. April 2020 saw Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope” and Maren Morris’s “The Bones” paired for a week, followed by Miranda Lambert’s “Bluebird” alongside Barrett’s continued run with “I Hope” that August. Gabby Barrett returned for the most recent pre-this-week occurrence, as “The Good Ones” led both charts for two weeks starting in late April 2021. Notably, Barrett and Ballerini are the only females to have exclusively led both charts simultaneously.

The distinction between the two charts is crucial to understanding the rarity of this event. Billboard launched the all-encompassing Hot Country Songs chart in October 1958. It became solely based on Luminate’s electronically monitored airplay data in January 1990. However, in October 2012, the Hot Country Songs chart adopted its current multimetric formula, incorporating streams, sales, and airplay, while the Country Airplay chart was established to preserve a dedicated focus on country radio airplay. Because these charts now track different types of total consumption, their alignment, especially under single-gender leadership, remains a genuinely uncommon and noteworthy moment in country music history.
