Classic Hit Returns! Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ Debuts on Hot 100 Five Decades After Release

Fleetwood Mac's timeless 1975 studio recording of “Landslide” has finally made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, landing at No. 41 on the Jan. 17-dated list. This historic chart entry follows the song's prominent placement in the series finale of Netflix’s popular show, *Stranger Things*, which was released on December 31. The song saw a significant surge in activity between January 2 and 8, generating 7 million official U.S. streams, marking a 43% increase week over week. Additionally, it garnered 888,000 radio audience impressions, up 10%, and sold 1,000 downloads, a 15% increase, according to Luminate.

“Landslide” was originally released in July 1975 as part of Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 10th studio album. This album was notable as it marked the first project featuring Stevie Nicks as a vocalist and Lindsey Buckingham as a guitarist for the band. Stevie Nicks not only wrote the poignant song but also delivered its lead vocals. Despite its eventual status as one of Fleetwood Mac’s most beloved and enduring compositions, the studio version was never officially issued as a single during its initial release period.

Throughout the years, “Landslide” remained a consistent staple in Fleetwood Mac’s live performances and Stevie Nicks' solo tours. A live version of the song, included on the band’s album *The Dance*, was later released as a single in 1997. That rendition successfully debuted on the Hot 100 in July 1998, peaking at No. 51 that August. It also achieved significant success on other charts, reaching No. 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart and No. 26 on Adult Pop Airplay.

The song's widespread appeal has also led to several successful covers by other artists over the decades. The Chicks’ rendition famously climbed to No. 7 on the Hot 100 in March 2003, while the Glee cast’s version, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, reached No. 23 in 2011. Other notable remakes include Smashing Pumpkins’ cover, which hit No. 3 on Alternative Airplay and No. 30 on Radio Songs in 1994, and versions by Kat Perkins and Chloe Kohanski from NBC’s *The Voice*, which charted on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs in 2014.

With the debut of “Landslide”’s studio version, Fleetwood Mac logs its 26th career entry on the Hot 100 and its first debut in 23 years, since “Peacekeeper” entered at No. 93 in March 2003. The group’s most recent Hot 100 appearance prior to this was in 2020, when their 1977 No. 1 hit “Dreams” re-entered the chart. This resurgence was sparked by a viral TikTok video featuring Nathan Apodaca, leading to massive streaming numbers and even recreations by Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, pushing “Dreams” to No. 12 in October 2020.

Significantly, “Landslide”'s entrance means Fleetwood Mac has now debuted on the Hot 100 in five different decades: the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000s, and ‘20s. This achievement places them in an elite group of bands with Hot 100 debuts across at least five decades, a landmark recently attained by The Beatles with “Now and Then” in November 2023. Other distinguished groups on this list include The Isley Brothers (six decades), The Rolling Stones, and Santana (five decades each).
