Charalampos Kostoulas Relives His Unforgettable Moment in Sports History

Brighton’s 18-year-old Greek forward, Charalampos Kostoulas, celebrated a career-defining moment by scoring an acrobatic overhead-kick equaliser in stoppage time at the Amex Stadium. The goal, his first for the club, rescued a point for the Seagulls against Bournemouth, after Brighton had fallen behind due to a controversial first-half penalty.
Kostoulas entered the match as a substitute and produced a moment of magic to cap a dramatic finish. The goal not only highlighted his technical ability but also underscored his growing importance to Brighton’s squad.
Controversial Penalty Sparks Manager’s Frustration
The match was overshadowed by a hotly-debated penalty awarded to Bournemouth. Marcus Tavernier converted the spot-kick after goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was judged to have fouled Amine Adli following a VAR review. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed his anger over the decision, stating that while there was contact, it did not meet the criteria of a foul according to prior discussions with referees.
Hurzeler emphasized, “A touch and a contact is not enough. While there might have been contact, it was not a foul according to the rules explained before the season,” calling the penalty award illogical despite acknowledging the quality of Kostoulas’s equaliser.
Rising Star From Greece Impresses Teammates
Kostoulas, a Greece Under-21 international, joined Brighton from Olympiakos in the summer for a reported £29.78 million. He made his professional debut in 2024, scoring seven goals in 22 first-team league appearances last season. Should an additional £1.7 million add-on be triggered, his transfer would set a record fee for a Greek player.
Since arriving at Brighton, Kostoulas has made 17 appearances and scored two goals, quickly earning praise from teammates. Captain Lewis Dunk described him as a “special talent”, noting that the overhead-kick equaliser reflected his immense potential and ability to adapt to a new league and country. Dunk added that he had even witnessed Kostoulas score better goals during training, suggesting that the young forward could deliver many more memorable moments for Brighton.
