Chaos on the Roads: Man Charged After Dramatic Police Chase Ends in Tram Crash

Greater Manchester Police responded to two separate incidents in early November, both involving police pursuits that culminated in vehicle crashes. These events, occurring within days of each other, led to multiple charges and arrests in Tyldesley and Oldham.

The first incident unfolded on Tuesday morning, November 4, when officers in the Worsley area spotted a suspicious vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The chase continued for several minutes before the car ultimately crashed on Castle Street in Tyldesley. Following the collision, the driver reportedly barged into a nearby home on the street. In an update issued later, Greater Manchester Police confirmed charges had been brought against the individual involved. Clifton Webber, a 39-year-old man from Brynorme Road, has been charged with a comprehensive list of offences, including threats to kill, two counts of assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance, and driving without a licence. Mr. Webber has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Tameside Magistrates' Court on January 6 next year.

Just four days later, on the morning of Saturday, November 8, a second dramatic incident occurred in Oldham. This event also involved a police chase which concluded when the suspect's vehicle collided with a tram. The collision took place under the Oldham Way flyover, near the Oldham King Street Metrolink stop on Henshaw Street. Greater Manchester Police stated that officers attempted to stop a white Volkswagen after its driver reacted suspiciously upon seeing a marked police car and failed to stop. A short pursuit ensued, but officers made the decision to cease the chase due to the perceived risk to other road users. Shortly after the pursuit was called off, the vehicle crashed into a Metrolink service bound for Shaw via Oldham. Dramatic images from the scene depicted significant damage to the front of the white Volkswagen. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the collision. Two men, aged 22 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and dangerous driving. The younger man, aged 22, faces an additional charge of suspicion of possession of class A drugs. Both individuals have been taken into police custody. The crash temporarily disrupted tram services, with the Rochdale line being closed, causing trams from Didsbury to terminate at Westwood and services from Rochdale to end at Derker. Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the incident was resolved, and the line reopened by 12:24 pm.
