Chaos Erupts as Gunman Disrupts White House Dinner: Trump Evacuated Amid Shots Fired

Panic erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, April 25, 2026, when gunshots were fired at the Washington Hilton hotel, forcing the urgent evacuation of U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump. Attendees in the ballroom ducked under tables and sought cover amid the bedlam, as videos circulated online showing heavily armed security personnel storming the hall. One Secret Service operative was struck by gunfire from close range but was saved by his bulletproof vest, with President Trump later confirming the officer was "doing great."
Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Allen, who was reportedly a registered guest at the hotel, charged a security checkpoint located just outside the ballroom around 8:36 p.m. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers before being subdued and taken into custody by Secret Service agents. Officials later confirmed he acted alone. Allen was not injured during the confrontation but was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, as was the injured Secret Service officer. Long guns and shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Investigations into Allen's background and motive revealed a complex profile. According to federal law enforcement sources, Allen confessed after his arrest that his intention was to "shoot Trump administration officials." His brother had previously alerted the New London Police Department after receiving a manifesto outlining the suspect's motives and explicit plans to target members of the Trump administration. Officials also noted Allen's social media activity, which allegedly contained anti-Trump and anti-Christian sentiments. President Trump described the suspect as a "sick guy" who "hates Christians." Allen's sister, Avriana Allen, told investigators that her brother frequently made extreme statements and spoke about carrying out actions to "fix" societal problems. She further disclosed that he had legally purchased firearms, including two handguns and a shotgun, storing them at their parents' residence without their knowledge, and regularly practiced shooting at gun ranges. Allen was also reportedly associated with a group known as “The Wide Awakes” and had participated in a “No Kings” protest in California.
Despite initial reports suggesting Allen had no prior criminal record and was not previously flagged by authorities, details about his education and professional life emerged. Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering and later earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025. He worked briefly as a mechanical engineer before transitioning into video game development and part-time teaching, helping high school students prepare for college admissions. A former high school teammate described him as exceptionally intelligent and calm, expressing disbelief at the allegations.
In the aftermath of the shooting, President Trump praised the swift response of law enforcement, stating, “Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely.” He initially mistook the sounds for something innocuous, but the First Lady quickly recognized the danger. The incident also reignited concerns about security at high-profile political events, with questions raised about the security measures at the Washington Hilton, particularly the placement of magnetometers. However, authorities stated that the security checkpoint outside the ballroom worked effectively, preventing further injuries. The shooting occurred following previous attempts on President Trump’s life, including an incident at a rally in Pennsylvania in July 2024 where he was injured, and another during a golf game in September 2024.
U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro, announced that Allen will face multiple federal charges, including two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, with additional charges expected. Federal agents, including personnel from the FBI and Secret Service, conducted an operation at Allen’s residence in Torrance as part of the ongoing investigation, securing a federal search warrant for further evidence.
The incident also prompted President Trump to renew his call for the construction of a new, highly secure ballroom within the White House complex. In a statement, Trump cited the security breach as justification, emphasizing long-standing demands for enhanced security infrastructure. He insisted such an event would have been impossible with the proposed "Militarily Top Secret Ballroom," describing it as aesthetically appealing, equipped with the highest level security features, and designed to eliminate vulnerabilities. Trump criticized an ongoing legal challenge against the project as baseless and politically motivated, asserting that "nothing should be allowed to interfere with its construction, which is on budget and substantially ahead of schedule."
