Celtic Victorious! Claims Fifth Straight Scottish Premiership Title with Iheanacho's Triumph
Celtic clinched their 56th Scottish Premiership title in the 2025/26 season, marking their fifth consecutive league crown in a dramatic final day at Celtic Park, also known as Paradise. The Hoops secured the championship by coming from behind to defeat long-time leaders Hearts 3-1, in a match where a win was essential to guarantee the title.
Hearts, who had led the Premiership table since September and were seeking their first league title since 1960, needed only a draw to be crowned champions. They stunned the home crowd in the 38th minute when Austrian defender Michael Steinwender rose highest to head them into a shock lead. However, Celtic's response was swift and decisive. Just before halftime, in the 44th minute, Arne Engels calmly converted a penalty to restore parity, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.
The second half saw a dominant performance from Martin O’Neill’s men. Japanese winger Daizen Maeda put Celtic ahead in the 58th minute with a clinical finish. This crucial goal was only awarded after a VAR review overturned the initial decision to rule it out. Substitute Callum Osmand then sealed the victory with a late third goal in the 82nd minute, sparking wild celebrations as the trophy remained at Paradise for another season.
Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho, who joined Celtic from Sevilla prior to the 2025/26 campaign, played a significant role in the title run. Against Hearts, he was introduced at halftime in place of Sebastian Tounekti, bringing energy and experience to the attack as Celtic overturned the deficit. The 29-year-old forward proved to be a valuable attacking asset, scoring eight goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.
The final league table confirmed Celtic atop with 82 points, just two points clear of a valiant Hearts side, managed by Derek McInnes, who pushed them throughout the season. For interim manager Martin O’Neill, this title marked his fourth managerial triumph with Celtic, 22 years after his last. This historic win meant Celtic surpassed Rangers in the total number of Scottish league titles won, now standing at 56. The victory came 40 years since Celtic last started the final day in second place and won the title, on that occasion also against Tynecastle club Hearts.
