Catholics Urge Pope Leo XIV to Unite a Fragmented World

Following the assumption of office by Pope Leo XIV, various religious bodies in Nigeria have extended their congratulations and offered their perspectives on the priorities the new Pontiff should consider. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have both conveyed their felicitations, emphasizing the need for unity and continued efforts towards global peace and justice.
The CBCN, led by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, expressed confidence in Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, assuring him of their unwavering allegiance, prayers, and support. They highlighted the papal transition as a demonstration of the Church’s commitment to dignity, spiritual discernment, and reverence. Archbishop Ugorji also acknowledged the roles of all Cardinals involved in the conclave, particularly Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpaleke, and called on Nigerians to pray for the new Pope’s wisdom and courage.
CAN, through Archbishop Daniel Okoh, echoed these sentiments, noting that Pope Leo XIV’s election signifies a renewal of hope for the Catholic Church. They expressed optimism that the new Pontiff would continue to promote peace, justice, and inclusiveness, building on the foundations laid by his predecessors.
Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, the Catholic Bishop of Oyo Diocese, emphasized that the Pope’s role extends beyond the Catholic community, urging Pope Leo XIV to focus on restoring the dignity of all human beings and fostering a world where everyone’s rights are respected. He called upon the Pope to be a “bridge builder” and “promoter of peace,” defending the rights of the poor, marginalized, migrants, and refugees.
Rev. Fr. Michael Nsikk Umoh of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) called for Pope Leo XIV to continue Pope Francis’ work in championing the cause of the poor and marginalized. He also urged the new Pope to raise awareness about global issues such as oppression and exploitation, and to consolidate efforts in interfaith dialogue and human fraternity. Fr. Umoh stressed the importance of clarifying any messages from Pope Francis that may have been misunderstood.
Fr. Prof. Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) advised Pope Leo XIV to follow the traditions of the Church and prioritize ecumenism, particularly inter ecclesia and interreligious dialogue. He also expressed hope that the new Pontiff would influence global leaders, such as the American President, to promote justice and ensure the Catholic Church continues in the right direction.
