Palm Sunday Celebrations: Calls for Peace and Servant-Leadership
Palm Sunday was commemorated by Christians around the world with reflections on peace, humility, and leadership. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other religious leaders used the occasion to counsel leaders on the importance of servant leadership and peaceful co-existence. Meanwhile, Pope Francis, against medical advice, made an appearance in St. Peter’s Square, greeting worshippers during his recovery from pneumonia.
In Abuja, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh urged Nigerians to rise above division and embrace their shared identity. He highlighted Palm Sunday as a symbol of peace, humility, and hope, particularly relevant during these uncertain times. Okoh condemned the recent killings in Plateau State and called on leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people, emphasizing compassion, justice, and national healing. He appealed to all Nigerians to unite in purpose to heal the land and build a future grounded in mutual respect and solidarity.
Echoing this sentiment, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, challenged leaders at all levels to practice intentional leadership. He reminded them to focus on providing basic amenities for their people and to be mindful of their actions, choosing to be peacemakers. Kaigama cautioned leaders not to be swayed by titles but to remain focused on their purpose, especially in the face of hunger and insecurity.
Pope Francis, despite his recent hospitalization, greeted worshippers in St. Peter’s Square, handing out sweets to children. His appearance, against the advice of his doctors, underscored his commitment to his followers. The Pope also issued a call for peace in the world during his Sunday Angelus prayer.
While traditional denominations observed Palm Sunday with customary services, some new generation churches engaged in alternative religious programs. For example, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) observed a 100-day fast, while Harvesters Christian Centre had previously completed a 21-day fast. Despite differing observances, the underlying message of Palm Sunday – the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ and the hope it signifies – resonated across various Christian communities.
Adeline Olisakwe and Victoria Toose emphasized the significance of Palm Sunday and Easter, highlighting the hope and new life that Jesus Christ's journey to Jerusalem and subsequent resurrection bring to Christians.
