BTS Crowned Artist of the Year at 2026 AMAs, Sweeping Awards!

The 2026 American Music Awards, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday, May 25, celebrated a night of diverse musical talent, with no single artist dominating the accolades. Instead, seven acts remarkably tied for the lead, each taking home three awards: Bruno Mars, BTS, Cardi B, KATSEYE, Sabrina Carpenter, HUNTR/X, and Sombr. The prestigious fan-voted ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah, highlighted achievements across various genres, though it also saw some surprising outcomes, including Taylor Swift's eight nominations yielding no wins.

K-Pop sensation BTS emerged as one of the night's big winners, securing the coveted Artist of the Year award for the second time, having previously won in 2021. This places them alongside Justin Bieber and One Direction as groups with multiple wins in this esteemed category. The Grammy-nominated septet triumphed over a star-studded field of competitors including Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, and Sabrina Carpenter. In addition to Artist of the Year, BTS also earned the Song of the Summer award for their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "SWIM" and Best Male K-Pop Artist. These three new trophies elevate their career AMA tally to 14, making them second only to country titans Alabama among groups or duos.

During their emotional acceptance speech for Artist of the Year, after an elongated greeting with presenter Busta Rhymes, RM addressed the dedicated ARMYs. He expressed gratitude, stating, "ARMYs, we made it once again. Thank you. It’s an honor to have this precious award." He further acknowledged the fans' unwavering support, remarking, "Like the legendary Busta Rhymes said, it’s a fan-voted award, so our biggest thanks and gratitude goes to the ARMYs all over the world. You stood by us for the past 13 years — thank you so much." J-hope conveyed his awe at the reaction to their album, "ARIRANG," thanking fans for embracing it and every song that charted. Jimin concluded the group's remarks by thanking fans for their passionate support on tour and love shown in every city. Beyond their wins, the Bangtan Boys delivered a thrilling performance of their single "Hooligan," featured on their 2026 Billboard 200-topping album, ARIRANG. The album itself debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March, earning 641,000 equivalent album units, marking the reunited crew's seventh chart-topper.

Among the other artists who secured three awards, Bruno Mars was recognized with Best Male R&B Artist, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album. Cardi B earned accolades for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Best Hip-Hop Song, and Best Hip-Hop Album. Sabrina Carpenter clinched Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Artist, and Best Pop Album. The global girl group KATSEYE made a significant impact by winning New Artist of the Year – becoming the seventh consecutive female act to do so – as well as Best Music Video and Breakthrough Pop Artist. HUNTR/X's "Golden" continued its award season success by winning Song of the Year, Best Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Song, adding to its previous Grammy and Oscar wins. Finally, Sombr surprised many by taking home Best Rock/Alternative Song for "Back to Friends," Best Rock/Alternative Album for "I Barely Know Her," and Breakthrough Rock/Alternative Artist, despite his album reaching only No. 10 on the Billboard 200.

While many celebrated, some prominent artists faced unexpected setbacks. Taylor Swift, who led all nominees with eight nods, notably went home without any awards. Despite this, she maintains her record as the artist with the most AMAs in history, boasting a remarkable 40 trophies. Similarly, Olivia Dean (seven nods), Morgan Wallen, and Lady Gaga (both with six nods) also concluded the night winless. However, other artists had their moments of triumph: Karol G's "Tropicoqueta" was named Best Latin Album, and she also received the International Artist Award of Excellence. Twenty One Pilots secured Best Rock/Alternative Artist for the second consecutive year and fourth time overall, a category where only Linkin Park has more wins. The Black Eyed Peas' "Rock That Body" won in the newly introduced Best Throwback Song category.

The American Music Awards, founded by legendary producer Dick Clark in 1974, are renowned as the world’s largest fan-voted award show. Nominees are determined by key fan interactions, including streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay, and tour grosses, all meticulously tracked by Billboard and Luminate. The eligibility period for the 52nd AMAs covered data from March 21, 2025, through March 26, 2026. Dick Clark Productions, a subsidiary of Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge Industries and Billboard parent company Penske Media, produced the event.
