Brazilian President Lula's Rivals Targeted: Flavio Bolsonaro Flees to US Amid Passport Seizure and Arrest Demands

The Trump administration has delivered a definitive message to Brazil's socialist government, affirming its support for allies when left-wing judges and politicians are perceived to be targeting the opposition. This stance was underscored by Marco Rubio’s State Department, which announced its intent to issue U.S. visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family. This decision comes after Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the seizure and cancellation of their passports, an action taken swiftly within 24 hours of Sunday's presidential runoff election.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and a right-wing candidate, had recently lost the presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is currently under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering, charges he vehemently denies. Justice Moraes, who has a history of targeting the Bolsonaro family, moved to strip Flávio’s ability to leave the country almost immediately after the election results. Brazilian authorities subsequently canceled his passports after he failed to surrender them by the court-mandated deadline.

The election process itself has been called into question by former President Trump, who stated it “looked like another rigged election, frankly” and emphasized that “elections have to be indisputable.” Flávio Bolsonaro also rejected the results, citing a last-minute decision by a Lula-appointed Supreme Court justice to extend voting hours. Although his party later acknowledged the outcome, this sequence of events significantly fueled widespread conservative concerns regarding judicial interference within Brazil.

Instead of allowing what the Trump administration sees as Lula’s allies attempting to incarcerate another Bolsonaro, the U.S. is offering Flávio, his wife, and their two daughters a pathway to American soil. A U.S. official confirmed that the visas would be issued and entry permitted. This decision reflects the Trump administration’s policy of protecting conservative leaders from what it describes as leftist regimes in Latin America weaponizing courts against political opponents, rather than overlooking such actions.
