Bosch Star's Explosive '80s Crime Thriller: Teaser Drops, Summer Release Date Set!

Titus Welliver, widely recognized for his portrayal of LAPD detective Harry Bosch, is set to return to screens in a new capacity, starring in the upcoming MGM+ crime drama, "The Westies." Premiering Sunday, July 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the series marks a significant departure for Welliver, who will embody a corrupt police officer, Glenn Keenan, in a role described as complex and deeply nuanced, a stark contrast to his iconic Bosch character.
"The Westies" plunges viewers into the brutal underworld of 1980s Hell’s Kitchen, New York, during one of the city's most dangerous eras. The narrative follows the infamous Irish-American gang, The Westies, as they desperately fight to retain power amidst a historic gang war. Vastly outnumbered by New York's powerful Five Families, the gang leverages its ferocity and determination, particularly as the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center brings substantial financial opportunities into their territory, fueling the intense conflict.
Welliver's character, Glenn Keenan, is a Vietnam War veteran and beat cop whose moral compass has been "completely compromised." As Welliver himself explained, despite being a law enforcement officer who still walks the streets, Keenan operates within a "very, very dark world," showcasing the intricate and challenging nature of the role that drew the actor back to the police drama genre.
The series boasts a notable cast alongside Welliver, including J.K. Simmons as Eamon Sweeney, Tom Brittney as James “Jimmy” Roarke, Jessica Frances Dukes as Birdie Polk, Stanley Morgan as Mickey Flanagan, Sarah Bolger as Bridget Walsh, Allen Leech as Brendan Cahill, Hamish Allan-Headley as John Gotti, Vincent Walsh as Eddie Breen, and Hilary McCormack as Erin Malone. Additional cast members include Will Jeffs, Rohan Mead, Maria Dinn, Andrea Gallo, and Harry Hadden-Paton. "The Westies" is created by Chris Brancato and Michael Panes, with Brancato, known for his work on "Godfather of Harlem" and "Narcos," serving as showrunner and executive producer.
Beyond his new venture, Titus Welliver maintains a strong presence in the "Bosch" universe that solidified his reputation in cop dramas. He originally played Harry Bosch for seven acclaimed seasons on the Prime Video original series (2014-2021) and later reprised the role for "Bosch: Legacy," which ran for three seasons on Prime Video. While "Bosch: Legacy" faced a surprising cancellation, discussions are reportedly underway for Welliver to potentially return to the role. Fans can also anticipate his return as Harry Bosch in the second season of "Ballard," coming soon to Prime Video. Separately, a "Bosch" prequel show starring Cameron Monaghan is under development by Prime Video, though Welliver is not currently involved.
With "The Westies" and ongoing "Bosch" projects, Welliver continues to be a prominent figure in the crime thriller genre, offering viewers both familiar and new interpretations of complex law enforcement and criminal worlds. While the release format for "The Westies" (binge or weekly) is yet to be announced, Collider has already debuted exclusive previews, including an image of J.K. Simmons, hinting at the high anticipation for its global launch this summer.
