Bloodbath on the Road: Gunmen Attack Ex-Governor Ngige's Convoy in Anambra, One Dead

The convoy of former Anambra State governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, came under fire on the Nkpor–Nnobi Road after gunmen disguised in police and army camouflage launched a violent assault. Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time, a fact he confirmed through his media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe. The Anambra State Government later acknowledged the severity of the incident.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen ambushed the convoy and opened sudden, unprovoked gunfire, prompting security operatives to return fire. The pilot vehicle at the front was heavily targeted and left riddled with bullets, underscoring the intensity of the attack. Officials noted that the Nigeria Police Force had already activated rapid-response protocols.
One civilian tragically lost her life. The woman had stepped out of her hairdressing salon and was recording the unfolding chaos when she was fatally shot. Another civilian, a shop owner who rushed out to observe the commotion, suffered severe injuries and significant blood loss. He is scheduled for surgery and is expected to recover fully, with doctors confirming no damage to his spine. Updates were reported by Channels Television.
A police officer serving as the lead escort in the pilot vehicle was also wounded. His service weapon and uniform were stolen by the attackers. He has since undergone surgery and is in stable condition. Rumours that an officer had died were dismissed by Ngige’s team and the police command, who confirmed that only one officer sustained injuries.
Dr. Ngige condemned the “heinous” attack and vowed that the perpetrators “will not go unpunished.” He assured that all injured victims would receive full medical attention and confirmed his plan to return to Abuja following the unsettling incident.
The Anambra State Police Command launched a coordinated manhunt for the fleeing gunmen. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the bullet-riddled vehicle from the convoy had been secured as part of ongoing investigations. He also confirmed the recovery of a white Mercedes-Benz SUV earlier snatched by armed criminals, a breakthrough achieved through a pursuit involving tactical units. The intensified gun duel forced the criminals to abandon the stolen SUV and flee under pressure.
