Bezos Bets Big: Consortium Acquires 38% Stake in Liverpool Football Club

A significant shift in the ownership structure of Liverpool Football Club has occurred with the acquisition of a substantial minority stake by a new consortium. 1892 Holdings, a group that includes prominent figures such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, has purchased approximately 38% of the Premier League club from its current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Initially, reports suggested a purchase of about a third of the club, but BBC’s reporting confirmed the higher figure. This strategic investment also includes a crucial option for 1892 Holdings to potentially acquire a controlling stake in Liverpool within the next 12 months, although it is important to note that no formal commitment has been made to finalize such a deal.

FSG officially confirmed the "definitive agreement" on Friday, characterizing the transaction as the sale of a "strategic minority investment." The consortium, aptly named 1892 Holdings after the year of Liverpool’s founding, is spearheaded by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, brings a wealth of experience from his previous involvement in football; he served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before divesting his stake in the Championship club just last month.

Subject to the necessary regulatory approval, Amit Bhatia is slated to assume the role of Liverpool’s vice-chairman and will join the club's expanded board, indicating a hands-on involvement in the club's future direction. The deal underscores the immense financial attractiveness of Premier League clubs on a global scale, reportedly valuing Liverpool at an impressive sum between £5 billion and £6 billion.

Fenway Sports Group, which completed its takeover of Liverpool in 2010, has overseen a remarkably successful period for the club. Under FSG’s stewardship, Liverpool has achieved significant sporting milestones, including triumphs in the Premier League and the Champions League, alongside substantial commercial growth. While this latest investment signifies a major alteration in the club’s ownership landscape, FSG has clarified that it will retain control of Liverpool following the sale of this strategic minority stake, ensuring continuity in leadership despite the new partnership.
