Behind the Scenes: 'For All Mankind' Creators Reveal Long-Game Death Plan

The Apple TV+ sci-fi series "For All Mankind" recently presented a pivotal moment in its fifth season with the passing of Joel Kinnaman's iconic character, Ed Baldwin, in Episode 3. For five seasons, Ed Baldwin had been a steadfast and constant presence on the show, embodying the relentless spirit of progress amidst the intricate NASA politics and challenging interplanetary crises. His death, while perhaps anticipated by fans due to discussions of his health issues beginning in Season 5, Episode 1, served as a deeply emotional farewell and a significant turning point for the series, which is now shifting its focus to a new generation, notably Ed's grandson, Alex (Sean Kaufman).
In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, co-creators Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert shed light on the monumental decision behind Ed's demise. They revealed that the plan for Ed’s exit was conceived well in advance, as early as Season 4. The creators deliberately chose to orchestrate his death mid-season, rather than in a finale, to subvert audience expectations and to strategically empower the narrative for the latter half of Season 5. Nedivi elaborated that Ed's passing was intended to profoundly influence the storylines of the younger generation, particularly Alex and his mother, stating that "even after he dies, his presence is felt in almost every episode, in almost every way." This decision, though difficult, was a shared one with Joel Kinnaman, who embraced the arc.
Nedivi and Wolpert also underscored Joel Kinnaman's invaluable contribution to the series, acknowledging that "this show does not happen if Joel Kinnaman didn't sign on to it." They lauded his portrayal of Ed Baldwin throughout the seasons, with Nedivi remarking that Season 5 showcased Kinnaman's "best season." Kinnaman's acceptance and robust execution of this challenging final arc were praised, with the creators noting he performed it "like a champ."
The final day of filming for Joel Kinnaman was described as an incredibly emotional experience for the entire cast and crew. Matt Wolpert recounted the scene where Ed walks down a hallway, encountering apparitions of Gordo and Karen, as Kinnaman's last filmed moment. The willingness of Michael Dorman (Gordo) and Shantel VanSanten (Karen) to return for this poignant farewell scene, despite their demanding schedules, underscored their deep connection to the characters and the show's tight-knit community. Wolpert reflected on it as one of the most emotional days he had ever experienced on a set, highlighting the strong personal bonds forged over the series' five-season run and the profound character arc provided to Kinnaman.
"For All Mankind" Season 5 is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes released weekly. The series continues to delve into the enduring legacy and impact of characters like Ed Baldwin as the narrative progresses towards its anticipated sixth and final season.
