Hollywood's New Box Office Kings: Super Mario Galaxy & Project Hail Mary Dominate 2026 Projections!

"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" has officially claimed the top spot as the highest-grossing film of the year to date, raking in an impressive $629 million at the global box office. Its towering ticket sales are projected to continue climbing, potentially reaching the $1 billion mark in the coming weeks. However, the film is set to face strong competition from major upcoming tentpoles like "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey," "Toy Story 5," and "Avengers: Doomsday" as it strives to retain its crown throughout the remainder of the year.

In its second weekend of release, the "Mario" adventure demonstrated significant international appeal, collecting $83.5 million from 81 territories. To date, the family-friendly film has garnered $320 million overseas and $308 million in North America. Key international markets contributing to its success include Mexico with $47.8 million, the United Kingdom and Ireland with $37.4 million, Germany with $29 million, and France with $23.9 million. This performance mirrors the success of Universal’s previous entry, 2023’s "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which concluded its run as the second-highest-grossing release of that year with $1.3 billion.

Meanwhile, the Ryan Gosling-led space epic, "Project Hail Mary," has surpassed a notable box office milestone, with ticket sales exceeding $500 million globally, reaching $510 million after four weekends. The Amazon MGM film generated $254 million overseas and $256.5 million domestically. Over a recent weekend, "Project Hail Mary" maintained its strong international presence, pulling in $30.6 million from 88 markets, a modest 31% drop from the prior weekend.

Also making headlines is A24’s provocative comedy, "The Drama," which has added a solid $16 million from 50 overseas territories in its sophomore outing. Starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, the R-rated movie has accumulated an impressive $35 million internationally and $65 million globally after just two weekends of release, all on a production budget of under $28 million. The film's controversial central premise, which revolves around a couple whose relationship is tested after revealing their worst deeds, has sparked considerable online conversation, a factor expected to help sustain its run on the big screen.
