Behind the Music: Lola Young's High-Stakes Legal Battle for 'Messy' Royalties

Lola Young, the acclaimed South London-born singer, has recently announced she is stepping back from the spotlight for the foreseeable future, a decision intensified by an ongoing and increasingly acrimonious legal dispute. Sources indicate a heated legal battle has been brewing for several months between Young and American producer Carter Lang, who is asserting claims for monetary compensation from her breakout hit, "Messy," and three other tracks.

The core of the dispute revolves around Lang's insistence that he is owed a share of the profits from "Messy," a song released in May of the previous year that catapulted Young into household recognition. "Messy" is nearing a billion streams on Spotify and, upon reaching No.1, made Young the youngest British artist since Dua Lipa in 2017 to achieve such a feat. Despite its massive success, which stemmed from a track Young reportedly penned in her bedroom, Lang's claims have blindsided Lola and her team.

Lola Young’s legal representatives have been actively involved in tackling Carter Lang's allegations. According to court filings and statements, Young's team strongly refutes Lang's claims, asserting that his input on "Messy" was minimal at the time of its conception. While Lang was involved in the production of her album, "This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway," his contribution to "Messy" specifically is questioned. Lola’s lawyers highlight that sessions took place and agreements were put in place, making Lang's belated demands particularly contentious.

In a formal statement issued by Lola Young's lawyers, they expressed "immense disappointment" and confirmed they had "no choice but to respond to recent writing credit claims from Carter Lang on four Lola Young songs by issuing legal proceedings on her behalf." The statement further clarifies that "Carter’s claims are strongly refuted and we will not allow Lola’s reputation and integrity to be called into question - particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place." They emphasized Lola's consistent authenticity in her songwriting process and her appropriate acknowledgment of contributions. The legal team looks forward to the truth being established through these proceedings.

The stress from this ongoing legal battle is believed to be a significant factor in Young's recent decision to cancel all her shows and take a break, following a collapse on stage last month. The immense pressure placed on young artists within the music industry is highlighted by this situation. Carter Lang, known for his work on Justin Bieber's last two albums, is now seeking a share of profits from "Messy," a move questioned by observers given his apparent lack of initial concern when the song was first released. This legal entanglement adds considerable strain to an artist who has worked tirelessly to achieve her current standing and has always supported her collaborators.
