Adam Driver & Anne Hathaway Join Forces for Ron Howard's War Drama

Ron Howard, the acclaimed Oscar-winning director, is set to helm a new military drama titled 'Alone at Dawn' for Amazon MGM Studios, bringing to life another remarkable true story. The film has officially secured Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway in leading roles, promising a powerful portrayal of heroism during the Afghan War.

'Alone at Dawn' is based on the New York Times bestselling book by Dan Schilling and Lori Longfritz, which recounts the extraordinary valor of Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman. The narrative centers on Chapman's courageous last stand, where he fought alone to save over 20 of his Navy SEAL comrades. The film will also shed light on the efforts of an intelligence officer who, years later, meticulously investigated Chapman's story to substantiate his valor, ultimately making him the first airman in nearly 50 years to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The events detailed in the film took place on March 4, 2002, when Chapman, a member of SEAL Team Six, led a desperate charge up a mountain peak in Afghanistan to locate a lost comrade after helicopters were downed. During this assault, he sustained mortal wounds and lost consciousness, leading his fellow officers to believe he was dead and leave him behind as they continued their advance. Miraculously, Chapman awoke to find himself confronted by three groups of skilled enemy fighters. Despite his severe injuries, he continued to fight alone, ensuring the safety of a rescue squad—a heroic act in the face of death that sparked a movement to grant him the coveted Medal of Honor.

While internal resistance initially challenged the awarding of the Medal of Honor, as it would necessitate acknowledging that military personnel had left a man behind, Chapman eventually received an updated Air Force Cross that fully recognized his profound sacrifice. In the film, Adam Driver is slated to portray John Chapman, a role Driver, a former Marine and Oscar-nominated actor, has reportedly long sought in a military/war project with the right story. Anne Hathaway will play the pivotal intelligence officer who championed Chapman's case and helped secure his recognition.

The journey to bring 'Alone at Dawn' to the big screen has been extensive, predating the book's bestseller status. Hideaway Entertainment secured the film rights after a competitive bidding process, impressed by Schilling and Longfritz's original manuscript. Lori Longfritz is also Chapman's sister, adding a personal dimension to the project. Michael Russell Gunn, known for his work on 'Designated Survivor' and 'Thai Cave Rescue,' is handling the writing duties, with previous revisions contributed by Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog. Ron Howard was compelled to join as director after reading the story, drawn by its incredible true-life magnitude, echoing his previous successes with historical dramas like 'Apollo 13,' 'Thirteen Lives,' and 'Eden.'
