Battle for Makerfield: Candidates Face Scrutiny in Contentious By-Election

The Ashton-in-Makerfield constituency is currently at the heart of a significant political and cultural storm, with its by-election scheduled to take place on June 18. This contest, triggered by the resignation of MP Josh Simons to clear a path for Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, has drawn considerable media attention and highlighted deep-seated frustrations and shifting loyalties among voters.
Key figures in the election include Labour's Andy Burnham, Reform UK's Rob Kenyon, and the Green Party’s Sarah Wakefield. However, the race also features independent candidate Count Binface, the comedic persona of Jonathan David Harvey, who has a well-established history in elections, including London Mayoral contests and standing against Rishi Sunak. Describing himself as an 'independent space warrior,' Count Binface's 20-step manifesto aims to 'Makerfield Great Again' with bold promises such as cutting his constituents' taxes while raising everyone else's. His quirky proposals include forcing cyclists who break the highway code to ride unicycles, conscripting individuals who use speakerphones on public transport, capping the price of 99 Flake ice creams at 99p, and making the 'Full Monty Bin Lid' breakfast at Galloways Bakers café Britain's new national dish. Locally, he proposes regenerating Ashton-in-Makerfield's £6.6m scheme, increasing free parking at the Gerald Centre to three hours, and rephrasing traffic lights on Liverpool Road to ease congestion. Nationally, he intends to rename HS2 to FFS1 and reroute it through rail executives' homes, move hand-dryers in a specific Uxbridge pub, abolish auto-renewal of online subscriptions, scrap parliamentary food subsidies, bring back Ceefax for Greater Manchester, 'double-lock' pensions with an extra chain, and ensure proper corner refereeing in football. He has also vowed to represent the UK at Eurovision if elected, garnering positive reactions for his 'sensible' and humorous points.
Reform UK candidate Rob Kenyon, a plumber from Haydock and a Bryn councillor, sees his challenge against Andy Burnham as a 'win-win' situation. He plans to scrap a 400-home housing estate in Winstanley and crack down on Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). Kenyon has faced intense scrutiny over his social media history, including deleted posts linked to anti-vax conspiracy theories, pro-Russian sentiment, and a sexually explicit comment about broadcaster Carol Vorderman. Vorderman herself criticized Kenyon, stating his posts showed a 'pattern' of misogynistic comments, sending letters to 6,000 women in the constituency. Kenyon dismissed the Vorderman comment as 'squaddy banter' to be taken lightly, attributing Vorderman's strong reaction to her dislike of Reform. He also explained accepting a friend request from a neo-fascist account, claiming it was for a campaign-specific profile where he accepted all requests, deleting the account as soon as he was alerted to its nature. Kenyon believes the election is a 'two-horse race' between Labour and Reform UK, dismissing the threat from newcomer party Restore as negligible and a vote for them as a vote for Labour.
The political divisions are acutely visible on Bolton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, where houses display a mix of Labour red and Reform turquoise placards, reflecting a microcosm of the constituency's broader sentiment. Many former Labour voters are switching to Reform, driven by frustrations over immigration, policing, crime, and a perception that Labour has abandoned working people. Albert Bretherton, a 79-year-old retired haulier and Reform supporter, exemplifies this disillusionment, stating his friends are 'fed up with Labour' and criticizing Andy Burnham's record and the manner of his entry into the by-election. He believes many fear being labeled racist for supporting Reform but insists his neighbors, despite differing views, remain cordial.
Conversely, a 19-year-old resident, a strong Labour supporter from a family with deep Labour roots, praises Andy Burnham as a 'great guy' and local figure. He criticizes Rob Kenyon as 'sexist' due to his social media posts and views immigration positively for the economy. He recounts an altercation with Reform canvassers, including Rob Kenyon, following Nigel Farage's visit to a local pub. Andrew, Albert's son-in-law, openly supports Reform, placing two turquoise placards on his property. He expresses dissatisfaction with Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham, citing high taxes for working people and concerns about immigration, while rejecting any 'far right' label. He jokingly suggests political differences might affect neighborly acts, though actual tensions remain low.
Mike Brumskill, a retired police officer and ardent Labour supporter, has placed Andy Burnham stickers in his window to counteract a Reform sign on a neighbor's hedge. He sees Burnham as a 'genuine man' with a 'moral compass' and believes only Burnham can beat Reform in the area. Brumskill expresses deep alarm over Nigel Farage's rhetoric, comparing him to Oswald Mosley, and is appalled by Kenyon's 'misogynistic' social media posts, particularly as a father of daughters. He welcomes the emergence of Restore, hoping it will fragment the Reform vote. Despite these sharp political divides, residents of Bolton Road emphasize their commitment to neighborly relations, managing to disagree fiercely without personal animosity. As the by-election approaches on June 18, the community awaits the results, knowing they must continue to live side by side regardless of the outcome.
