'Ballerina' Movie: Discussions on Ending, John Wick Connections, and 'John Wick 5' Implications

The latest installment in the John Wick universe, the spinoff film Ballerina, centers on Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) as she seeks revenge for her father's murder. Set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, the film not only expands the world but also leaves audiences with significant questions about Eve's future and the franchise's trajectory.
Ballerina culminates with Eve successfully avenging her father by killing The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne). However, her victory is short-lived, as the final moments reveal a substantial contract placed on her head, a cliffhanger that has sparked much discussion. The identity of who placed the hit remains a mystery, leaving Eve's path forward uncertain.
Director Len Wiseman has shared his own theory regarding this ambiguous ending, suggesting that Eve’s mother, a character believed to be deceased within the film's narrative, could be responsible. Wiseman revealed that early script drafts for Ballerina included more interaction with Eve's mother, and he expressed a desire to explore this potentially complex and emotional storyline in a future installment, should a sequel materialize. He mused that if Eve's mother were alive, learning of the devastation in Hallstatt and the death of Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno) might lead her to place the contract on her own daughter.
Interestingly, the concept of ending Ballerina with a bounty on Eve’s head was an idea from Keanu Reeves himself, the star of the John Wick series. Wiseman confirmed that Reeves suggested this ending as a thematic riff on the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 2. This narrative choice underscores the pervasive theme of
