Ana de Armas' 'Ballerina' Releases on Digital After Less Than a Month: What Does That Mean

Published 5 days ago3 minute read

Not every film is meant to perform well in theaters, and Ana de Armas’ Ballerina has certainly proved that. The movie is already out for a digital release on streaming platforms after less than a month, and it doesn’t signify a good trend.

Directed by Len Wiseman with a story by Shay Hatten, Ballerina depicts the story of Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, an assassin trained in the Ruska Roma, who goes on a path of bullets and blood to avenge the death of her father. Despite an intriguing story, the movie didn’t meet the box office expectations that people were hoping for.

Although people might think that a quick turnaround from earning millions at the box office to being available for streaming in such a short time necessarily means that the film is bad, well, the answer is both yes and no.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina had a great start when it originally aired in theaters. The film’s early earnings already broke the record of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, and people were celebrating the success of Ana de Armas’ action flick.

However, a recent listing on Prime Video confirms that the movie is available to rent on Prime Video for $19.99 and purchase for $24.99. Note that the film was released on June 6, 2025, and on July 1, the film was ready for rent or purchase on digital platforms.

That’s quite a turnaround, and one that many people are considering to be a failure on Ana de Armas’s part. However, we believe that the movie isn’t necessarily bad and that a quick jump to streaming services after a brief run in theaters was actually a smart thing to do.

Ballerina had a brief run in theaters as the film managed to cross over the $90 million budget with which it was made. But, it didn’t have an exactly impressive box office record.

Although the reviews were impressive and fans were quite happy with how the film turned out, Ballerina’s shift to a streaming platform is a smart move to get the best profit while they still can.

When the film failed to reach the target of $225 million to be considered a hit, the studio executives decided to shift it to streaming platforms because of how people’s tastes have changed over time. People have formed a habit of streaming movies from the comfort of their homes, and a shift to Prime Video could mean that people who wanted to watch the film but couldn’t in theaters can now stream it from their homes.

Of course, a shift to streaming platforms because the box office target wasn’t matched is indeed bad news for Ballerina, but it’s also a smart decision in hopes of earning as much money as possible while the world is still in love with the franchise.

Ballerina was an experiment that received critical acclaim but not commercial success, and naturally, the John Wick franchise will indeed adapt and change according to what people like best. Do you think Ballerina is a good movie? Let us know your thoughts below.
