Aura, leadership and zen - Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk on what makes Alisson Becker a special goalkeeper

Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk describe their pleasure at working with Alisson Becker during ‘Alisson: My Story’, a new LFC Original docuseries coming exclusively to All Red Video.
The Liverpool head coach and captain offer their opinions on the goalkeeper in the three-part series – episode one of which premieres on at 12pm BST on Friday (June 20).
Episodes two and three will follow on June 23 and June 26.
Of course, Slot’s first season of managing Alisson ended in Premier League glory, while Van Dijk has won a litany of major honours alongside the Brazilian since the ’keeper joined him at the Reds in the summer of 2018.
Slot says: “He meets almost all expectations you want from the perfect goalkeeper. Normally, you have to accept from a goalkeeper that maybe one or two he doesn’t have, but he’s comfortable with the ball at his feet.
“He’s relaxed, so he has no stress at all, where sometimes you see goalkeepers that are comfortable with the ball – good in the execution – are having a little bit of stress when the ball comes to them. But it seems as if he has no stress at all!
“Then of course because he is so tall, in crosses he can come for every single cross. That is really helpful for every defence. And shot-stopping is maybe his best asset he has. It’s very hard to score a goal against him from outside the box, it’s almost impossible. And inside the box you have to be really precise if you want to score a goal against him.”
Alisson was a key member of the Liverpool team that became champions in 2024-25 and Slot adds: “I think that role [in the title win] is clear for everyone who watched all our games – in the moments we needed him, he was there for us.
“But what is not known for everyone is his influence in the group. He is not the loudest but every time he speaks, everyone is listening. Before the game he is not the one who speaks most but he’s always there to bring messages to the players, and I think this is what’s not being seen by many: that he is one of the leaders of our group.
“Not by being vocal a lot but by being the person that he is. So, I think everybody feels comfortable with him, because he’s such a good human being. But he’s also a leader in terms of motivating the group, whenever he thinks that’s necessary.”
Van Dijk, meanwhile, states: “Sometimes I shout in training that he’s like a black cat – he’s so fast, so quick to the ground, his reflexes.
“What I really like about him is that he doesn’t look fazed and I think that’s a big asset to have, because it also gives that feeling to the rest of the team and also the fans that we’ve got everything under control.
“Obviously it’s still difficult in every game that we play, but I think that not showing any panic is a big trait. In terms of just pure goalkeeping he’s an outstanding goalkeeper, world-class in my opinion. Maybe the best of our generation, definitely in the last five to 10 years maybe.
“Obviously for me it’s easy to say because I’ve played with him but he’s a fantastic goalkeeper.”
