Andy Robertson: We'll be ready to meet the expectations of champions - Liverpool FC

Andy Robertson anticipates increased expectations on Liverpool next season – but believes the squad is primed to rise to them.
The Reds will enter 2025-26 as reigning Premier League champions, of course, having wrapped up the club’s 20th title with four games to spare last term.

Watch on YouTubeScotland captain Robertson is a surviving member of the team that won the trophy five years ago too, and therefore has experience of the added spotlight that follows.
“That’s something that now we’re going to need to deal with,” the left-back told Sky Sports.
“The lads that have been there for a while – me, Virgil [van Dijk], Mo [Salah] and Ali [Alisson Becker] – after we won the league the last time, we’d kind of got used to that, the kind of pressure, and we feel it. But for a lot of the lads now that they’ve won it, and the lads coming in, they’ll feel it for the first time.
“I don’t know how the bookies will put it but I’d imagine we’ll be probably favourites or there’ll certainly be more expectation on us than there was at the start of last season.
“And that kind of suited us last season, we could kind of go under the radar and get off to a good start, and then by the time people took us seriously we were probably too far ahead. That suited us perfectly last season.
“But now there’s expectation – we were No.1 last season, our fans probably expect us to be No.1 again this season, like they do every season, and there’ll be a lot more expectation. It’s up to us to manage that, it’s up to us to deal with that.
“I think we’ve got the mentality in the squad to do that. But the other teams will improve as well and it’s a hell of a tough league and we’ll see where we go.
“We believe in our squad and we believe in the mentality in the squad. We certainly won’t be resting on laurels, that’s for sure, and we’ll try to push as much as we can next season.”
Asked specifically about his own future ahead of a ninth campaign with Liverpool, the No.26 said: “We have discussed [it], of course we have. We’ve had good discussions, me and the club.
“But what the future holds, I’m not sure – all I know is tomorrow I fly off on holiday and it’s well-needed, I need a rest after a long season. Then I look forward to pre-season, that’s all my focus is.
“I can’t look too far ahead, I never have done that so I’m not going to start doing that now.
“I know the position I’m in, I know I’ve only got a year left and a lot is getting spoken about and said, but my pure focus is on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids, then I’ll try to come back in the best shape possible for pre-season and then we’ll see what the future holds when those decisions come.”
