Atiku Unleashes Political Storm, Declares War on APC After Defecting to ADC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally launched a strong offensive against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his intent to "fight" the party he accuses of inflicting "nothing but suffering" upon Nigerians. This declaration was made on Monday in Adamawa State, where Abubakar officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Addressing a jubilant crowd of supporters shortly after acquiring his membership card, Atiku asserted, "From today henceforth, I have begun my fight against APC—an evil party that has caused nothing but suffering for the people until the day we oust that party from governance."

Abubakar did not mince words in his criticism of the APC, alleging that the party has brought unprecedented hardship to the nation. He emphasized that no political party in Nigeria's recent history has been responsible for such widespread "suffering, abject poverty, and insecurity." He reiterated, "There has never been a party that had caused suffering, abject poverty, and insecurity to the Nigerian people like APC." In contrast to his accusations, Atiku pledged to provide superior leadership, stating, "With your support, we will provide better leadership that will lead to positive change in this country."

This latest political maneuver by Atiku Abubakar adds another chapter to his long and well-documented history of party affiliations and shifts. Reports indicate that his registration with the ADC solidifies a move that had been subject to intense speculation. It is recalled that Abubakar previously joined the APC in 2014, ahead of the 2015 presidential election, where he vied for the party's presidential ticket but was ultimately defeated by the late President Muhammadu Buhari. Subsequently, in 2017, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under whose banner he contested the presidential elections in both 2019 and 2023. The delay in formal registration by Atiku and other prominent opposition figures with the ADC had fueled considerable discussion regarding internal negotiations and strategic planning within the opposition ranks.
