Apple TV's Epic Fantasy Hunt: New Series Seeks Visionary Showrunner!

Apple TV's highly anticipated adaptation of Brandon Sanderson's "The Stormlight Archive," considered its most ambitious fantasy project to date, is currently in a crucial pre-production phase and not yet ready for filming. Author Brandon Sanderson has shed light on the primary reason for this delay: the ongoing search for a suitable showrunner to lead the expansive television production.

Sanderson confirmed in an exclusive interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at FanX Salt Lake that he is actively involved in the showrunner selection process, personally interviewing candidates. He emphasized the distinct role of a showrunner, stating, "Stormlight is still hunting a showrunner. So, a showrunner is like — I can write, but I've never been on set full-time directing a show... So we really need to get [a] really high-caliber showrunners, [who's] gonna be the expert that's gonna be there every day running the show, and so that's what we're looking for." This differs from his previous experience as a consulting producer on Prime Video's "The Wheel of Time," where his involvement was not day-to-day production management.

While Sanderson is writing for both "The Stormlight Archive" TV show and Apple's upcoming "Mistborn" movie — handling the latter's script himself — he anticipates working with a writing partner for "Stormlight." The showrunner, however, will be responsible for the overarching production management and on-set direction, ensuring the series' vision is consistently realized.

A key concern for Sanderson is maintaining the immersive quality of his fantasy world on screen. He expressed apprehension about the potential for budget cuts to compromise the visual integrity, stating, "The idea that you want the fantasy world to feel real — that's the hardest thing, because if you skimp on some elements of either the effects or the costuming, it'll feel like you're at a Renaissance fair rather than a fantasy world." He stressed that clean, well-executed costumes, sets, and visual effects are essential to prevent audiences from being "kicked out" of the story's illusion. Given "The Stormlight Archive" is a monumental series, securing a showrunner with experience managing such a large-scale production is paramount to achieving Sanderson's vision of a believable and grand fantasy world.

As of now, "The Stormlight Archive" adaptation does not have a set production start or release date, underscoring the careful and deliberate approach being taken to ensure its quality.
