Annie's Ultimate Fate in 'The Boys' Revealed: Justice Served?

After seven years and five seasons, Erin Moriarty's portrayal of Annie January, also known as Starlight, in The Boys has reached its conclusion. Throughout the series, the fate and happiness of the characters were constantly in jeopardy, leading Annie to a state of nihilism in the final season. Moriarty described Annie's questioning of her own existence and whether self-sacrifice was the path to a better world. However, with support from allies like MM (Laz Alonso) and Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Annie overcame this identity crisis. She not only helped The Boys achieve their primary mission but also found herself in a position ready to contribute to a promising future, including for her own child.

Annie and Hughie (Jack Quaid) achieve a profound "full circle" moment in the series finale. Following an emotional farewell at Butcher's (Karl Urban) grave, they embark on a new life together. They open an electronics shop that serves as Annie's base for her work as an independent supe, and she becomes pregnant with a baby they intend to name Robin, after Hughie's ex whose death was the series' inciting incident. Moriarty explained that this ending felt right because it depicts them returning to their true selves, even reflected in Annie's choice to wear her original Starlight colors, symbolizing her acceptance of this core part of her identity. This return signifies an evolved and complete moment for them as a couple.

A significant storyline that comes to a beautiful and satisfying conclusion is Annie's journey to motherhood. In Season 4, Firecracker (Valorie Curry) attempted to tarnish Starlight's reputation by exposing Annie's past abortion. This painful public reliving of a deeply personal decision, made when she and Hughie weren't ready for a child, becomes a powerful counterpoint to her final scene. Moriarty emphasized the importance of this narrative arc, stating that the show's commentary on the termination of pregnancy was about a woman exercising autonomy over her body and deciding when it was the right time to have a baby. She found it incredibly meaningful that the female lead's happy ending includes becoming pregnant, underscoring the message that choice and timing are paramount.

As The Boys concludes, the future of its beloved characters sparks natural curiosity, especially for Annie as a new mother. Reflecting on Annie's challenging experiences with her own parents (Tim Daly and Ann Cusack) and other parental figures in the show, Moriarty offered her insight into the kind of mother Annie would become. She believes Annie will be a mom who actively encourages her child to discover their own identity, independent of her own. Having been forced into the demanding and optics-oriented world of pageantry and superhero archetypes from a very young age, Annie will be exceptionally mindful about allowing her child to simply be a kid, fostering independence, and providing unwavering support wherever that path may lead them.
