Angela Rayner Embroiled in 'Fake' Leadership Website Scandal

Keir Starmer is facing one of the most serious political crises of his leadership, engulfed by controversy over the Mandelson appointment and growing speculation about Angela Rayner’s ambitions. The turmoil has been compounded by a string of senior staff resignations, yet Starmer has so far secured a temporary reprieve, with his Cabinet rallying publicly to shut down leadership challenges and project unity.
The crisis intensified after the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador sparked fierce backlash. Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s chief of staff, resigned after taking “full responsibility” for the decision, despite awareness of Mandelson’s past links to Jeffrey Epstein. Communications chief Tim Allan also stepped down shortly after, deepening perceptions of chaos at the heart of government.
Pressure on Starmer escalated when Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for his resignation, citing “too many mistakes,” while left-wing MPs and some union leaders echoed demands for him to reconsider his position.
Downing Street pushed back firmly, insisting Starmer has a “clear five-year mandate” and remains confident. Nevertheless, the dissent exposed fractures within Labour at a critical moment.
Speculation about Angela Rayner intensified after a brief appearance of a campaign-style website, angelaforleader.co.uk, which suggested leadership preparations. Rayner’s team strongly denied any involvement, calling it a “false flag operation” designed to undermine her, and she has sought legal advice over the unauthorized use of her name and image.
Despite reports of private fundraising and polling, Rayner publicly reaffirmed her support for Starmer, even as some MPs questioned whether her unresolved HMRC tax investigation could weaken any future leadership bid.
The fallout has unsettled financial markets, with gilt yields rising amid fears of political instability. Senior officials face scrutiny over Mandelson’s vetting, and the Intelligence and Security Committee is preparing to review related documents, though police approval remains pending.
As Starmer searches for a new chief of staff and braces for a tense Parliamentary Labour Party meeting, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has labelled his position “untenable.” Starmer, however, remains defiant, telling aides he intends to press on and prove that politics can still be “a force for good.”
