Bayelsa's Political Shakeup: PDP Scraps Automatic Ticket, Ignites 2027 Governorship Battle

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has officially declared its intention to foster a competitive governorship contest leading up to the 2027 election, firmly ruling out an automatic ticket for its state leader, Great Joshua MacIver. This announcement came despite MacIver's public declaration of his aspiration to contest the election. The party's position, articulated by the state chairman, Hon. Alabh George Turnah, at the first expanded meeting of heads of working committees and the inauguration of the party’s Campaign Budget Committee, indicates a commitment to an increasingly competitive internal race as more aspirants are expected to emerge.

During the meeting, Turnah also confirmed the completion of uploading the particulars of PDP candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal. He noted that the National Assembly candidates' particulars had already been published, with those for the State House of Assembly candidates expected to follow shortly. The chairman extended his congratulations to the candidates, expressing strong confidence in the party's ability to maintain its electoral strength within the state.

While formally welcoming MacIver’s governorship ambition, Turnah emphasized that this declaration does not translate into an automatic nomination. He reiterated the party's openness to all qualified members seeking its ticket, assuring that a level playing field would be provided for all aspirants, irrespective of their political standing. This stance encourages other interested PDP members to commence consultations and build support in anticipation of the party’s eventual nomination process.

A significant development disclosed at the meeting was Great Joshua MacIver’s approval of a substantial N70 million monthly subvention. This financial intervention is designated to support the administration and operations of the PDP across Bayelsa State, assisting its structures and officials from the ward level up to the state, national, zonal, and other support personnel. Turnah, however, explicitly stated that this financial support is distinct from MacIver's governorship ambition and will not compromise the party's nomination process or grant MacIver an unfair advantage over other aspirants.

Beyond the 2027 governorship race, the PDP chairman announced the party's resolution to actively participate in the forthcoming local government elections in Bayelsa. He instructed members interested in contesting chairmanship and councillorship positions to begin consultations and leverage the party’s platform. Turnah also issued a challenge to the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) to ensure the local government elections are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently, underscoring the party's expanded electoral focus on grassroots politics to bolster its overall political strength.

The party also approved the establishment of a Women Prayer Network, which will initially involve 100 women meeting twice monthly, with each participant receiving a monthly stipend of N10,000. This initiative is designed to strengthen the PDP's grassroots structures and enhance women's participation ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Additionally, the party scheduled its 100th State Executive Committee meeting for October 2, 2026, coinciding with activities marking Bayelsa State’s 30th anniversary.

Finally, Turnah lauded the National Leader of the PDP, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for his consistent support. He credited Wike's interventions with keeping the PDP active and electorally prepared in Bayelsa. The party concluded the meeting by passing unanimous votes of confidence and commendation on Wike, MacIver, and Turnah for their respective contributions to the party’s organization and growth.
