Angel Reese Makes WNBA History in Game Against Liberty

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese achieved a significant milestone in WNBA history during an 85–66 loss to the New York Liberty at Barclays Center. Despite the team's defeat, Reese's individual performance was a notable highlight as she set a new league record.
Reese became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 30 career double-doubles, accomplishing this remarkable feat in just 42 games. In doing so, she surpassed WNBA luminaries such as Tina Charles, Candace Parker, Natalie Williams, and Lisa Leslie, breaking Charles’s previous record by a significant five games.
In the game against the Liberty, Reese delivered a standout performance that secured her record. She finished with 17 points, shooting an efficient 8-of-13 from the field, which included making 1-of-3 attempts from three-point range. Alongside her scoring, she pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out three assists, and made two steals, completing her historic double-double.
Beyond this specific game, Angel Reese continues to be a dominant force on the boards for the Chicago Sky. Currently, she leads the entire WNBA in rebounds per game with an average of 12.1, a category she also led in the previous season. Within her team, Reese ranks fourth in scoring, averaging 9.1 points per game, just behind teammate Ariel Atkins. However, her field goal shooting, currently at 30.9% for this season, remains an area for potential improvement.
The aftermath of the game saw Angel Reese reportedly facing irrelevant, non-basketball questions during the post-game interview. Her teammate Ariel Atkins came to her defense with a strong statement: “The amount of crap that she gets on a day-to-day, and she still shows up,” Atkins said. “So whatever questions y’all got about our team, basketball-wise, we appreciate it. But all the other nonsense, it’s irrelevant. We’re here to play basketball and do what we do. We’re having a hard time right now. At the end of the day, this is a 23-year-old kid who handles herself with grace. Her crown is heavy.”
Meanwhile, the New York Liberty showcased their strength, extending their winning streak to nine consecutive games. Sabrina Ionescu spearheaded New York's victory with an impressive 23 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field, and contributing seven assists, four steals, and two blocks. Breanna Stewart also played a key role with 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
For the Chicago Sky, the loss deepened their ongoing struggles, dropping their season record to 2–6. The team is also contending with the significant absence of two-time WNBA champion Courtney Vandersloot, who is out due to a season-ending injury. In their encounter with the Liberty, the Sky managed to shoot 42.4% from the field but were limited to only 26.1% from three-point territory, marking their second lopsided defeat to New York this season.
Looking ahead, the Chicago Sky are scheduled to face the Atlanta Dream at Gateway Center Arena. The Dream currently hold a 6–3 record and are positioned near the top of the standings, just behind New York. The pivotal question for the Sky is whether Angel Reese’s historic achievement can serve as the catalyst needed to spark a turnaround in their challenging season.
