Angel Reese Shines Despite Sky Loss; Opponent Makes History

The Chicago Sky faced a tough loss against the Atlanta Dream on Friday, with the final score standing at 88-70. This defeat marked the Sky's third consecutive loss, highlighting their ongoing struggles early in the 2025 WNBA season. The game, held at the Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia, was initially a tight contest. The Sky held a narrow one-point lead at halftime, 39-38, but the Atlanta Dream pulled ahead by the end of the third quarter, establishing a 58-54 advantage that they ultimately extended for the win.
Despite the team's overall performance, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese achieved a notable personal milestone during the game. Reese became the first player in the 2025 WNBA season to reach 100 rebounds, a testament to her consistent impact on the boards. She finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, also adding one steal while making four of her 10 shot attempts. Although her plus-minus for the contest was -14, her contributions were multifaceted and respectable.
Reese's 2025 campaign has been characterized by ups and downs. While her rebounding prowess remains at a high level, averaging 12.1 rebounds per outing, her offensive efficiency has been less stellar compared to her rookie season. She entered Friday's game averaging just over 10 points per game on 35.8 percent field goal and 33.3 percent three-point shooting. This marks a decrease from her 2024 season, where she averaged 13.6 points per outing on 39.1 percent field goal shooting. The Sky had hoped for an improvement in her scoring, especially around the basket, for her second WNBA season.
On the Atlanta Dream side, star player Rhyne Howard also had a significant performance, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds by the end of the third quarter. More notably, Howard moved into fourth place on the Dream’s all-time assists list during the game, surpassing former WNBA player Layshia Clarendon after recording her third assist. This achievement further solidifies Howard's growing legacy with the Atlanta franchise, where she consistently leads both offensively and defensively. The Kentucky alum, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 WNBA draft, has already earned Rookie of the Year honors and two All-Star nods, averaging around 17 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game across her first three seasons.
Howard now stands among the elite in Dream history for assists. The top three players on the Dream’s all-time assists list include Angel McCoughtry, who played for the Dream from 2009 to 2018 and was considered their franchise player; Tiffany Hayes, a guard who played for the Dream from 2012 to 2019 and again in 2021 and 2022 before moving to the Golden State Valkyries; and Sancho Lyttle, who played with the Dream from 2010 to 2017 before retiring in September 2019 after 15 WNBA seasons.
The Chicago Sky's struggles extend beyond individual performances, with the team earning only two victories so far this season. Many players on the roster have underperformed, and the team lacks a true go-to scoring option. The loss of Chennedy Carter, who is not currently playing in the WNBA, during the past offseason has been a particularly difficult blow for the team's offensive capabilities.
Looking ahead, Angel Reese and the Sky will aim to turn their season around. Their next game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 12 PM EST against the Sun in Connecticut. Following that, Chicago will return home for two consecutive games: a Tuesday matchup against the Washington Mystics and a Saturday game against the Phoenix Mercury. The team hopes to find their rhythm and begin securing more wins in the upcoming fixtures.
