Two Kenya Air Force Officers Die in Kwale Aircraft Crash

A Kenya Air Force military aircraft tragically crashed on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in Viramboni village, Ndavaya, Kwale County, leading to the deaths of two officers. The ill-fated aircraft, identified as a Grob 120A model, was on a training flight when it experienced an emergency. Initial reports had suggested three officers might have been on board, but the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) later confirmed that there were only two officers in the aircraft when the incident occurred.

According to sources, the aircraft had departed Mombasa at 11:39 am and was last seen near Diani before disappearing from radar. The crash occurred approximately 27 minutes after takeoff, around 12 pm. The incident site was located in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, Kwale County.

Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde confirmed the tragic event, stating that security officers immediately launched investigations into the incident. The area was promptly cordoned off to prevent any interference with the ongoing probe. Personnel from the Red Cross, a team of police officers, and other multi-agency units were deployed to the scene to assist in the initial assessment and recovery efforts.

Despite the severity of the crash, the military aircraft did not catch fire. Pictures from the scene showed extensive damage, with parts of the plane scattered across the site, and the tail detached from the main fuselage, indicating the aircraft was completely written off. The KDF issued a statement confirming the incident and the ongoing recovery operations, with emergency response teams from the Kenya Air Force, a dedicated crash investigation team, and the Kenya Red Cross Society swiftly moving to the scene.

Residents of Ndavaya in Kinango were reported to be reeling in shock following the incident, with many gathered at the crash site in astonishment over the untimely deaths of the officers. Recovery operations are still ongoing as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the emergency that led to the crash.
