Nigerian Government Turns to Prayer and Fasting Amid Food Security Concerns

In a significant move to address the persistent challenges of food security in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has initiated a three-day fasting and prayer programme. This spiritual exercise, themed "Divine Intervention for Protection and National Development," aims to seek God’s guidance and support for the government’s comprehensive efforts to ensure stable and sustainable food systems across the nation. The initiative underscores the ministry’s commitment to combining both practical and spiritual solutions in tackling one of Nigeria’s most pressing issues.
The announcement of this solemn programme was made through an internal circular dated June 11, 2025, issued by Mrs. Adedayo Modupe, the Ministry’s Director of Human Resource Management. The circular explicitly invited all staff of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to participate in the prayer sessions, emphasizing their purpose: "This is to invite all staff of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to a solemn prayer session for God’s guidance and success in supporting the government’s efforts to achieve food security."
The prayer and fasting sessions are meticulously scheduled to take place on three consecutive Mondays in June 2025: June 16, June 23, and June 30. All sessions will be held at Conference Hall 'B' of the Ministry’s headquarters located in Garki, Abuja. Each prayer session is set to run from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., with ministry staff encouraged to observe fasting on these designated days and actively participate in the collective prayers.
This spiritual undertaking is designed to invoke divine support for Nigeria’s agricultural sector, which continues to face numerous hurdles including inadequate infrastructure, the impacts of climate change, and rising food prices. By fostering unity and a collective sense of purpose among ministry staff, the initiative seeks to enhance efforts in food production, distribution, and accessibility. The ministry has long recognized that robust food security is fundamental to national development, and this programme reinforces its holistic approach to addressing these complex challenges.
While the fasting and prayer sessions signify the government's openness to a spiritual dimension in solving national issues, they also serve as a profound reminder of the importance of seeking divine intervention during times of national crisis. The hope is that beyond bringing spiritual succour, these sessions will inspire a renewed commitment to practical, long-term agricultural reforms, ultimately paving the way for a more secure and prosperous food future for Nigeria.
