Ancient Ethereum Whale Stirs: 11-Year-Old ICO Holder Breaks 7-Year Silence!
An Ethereum whale, dormant since its 2015 ICO activity, has resurfaced after seven years, relocating a significant portion of its Maker (MKR) holdings. While not an immediate sale, this move sparks market interest regarding potential profit-taking, amidst Ethereum's ongoing efforts to stabilize above $1,900.
An Ethereum whale, identifiable by its long-standing presence since the 2015 initial coin offering (ICO), has recently broken a seven-year period of dormancy by initiating significant asset movements. This particular address holds historical importance within the Ethereum network, being one of its earliest and most recognizable holders, having initially accumulated a substantial 40,000 ETH during the nascent stages of the cryptocurrency.
The latest activity from this ancient investor, however, centers not on its original ETH holdings, but on its position in Maker (MKR). On-chain data reveals that the whale meticulously amassed 7,020.84 MKR tokens between September 2018 and May 2019, at an average acquisition price of approximately $828.92 per token. This entire position represented an initial investment of roughly $5.81 million. After years of inactivity, the whale has now transferred precisely half of its MKR holdings—3,510.42 MKR—to a newly established address. This transferred portion is currently valued at about $4.41 million at the prevailing market price, representing an impressive unrealized profit of approximately $1.51 million.
It is crucial to note that this transaction currently involves only a relocation of tokens between private addresses, and there is no immediate evidence suggesting a sale or a deposit onto a centralized exchange. This distinction makes the move less immediately bearish than a direct exchange deposit would be. Such transfers between private wallets typically indicate internal organizational shifts, such as changes in custody, wallet restructuring for security, or preparatory steps for future transactions. However, the sheer duration of the address's dormancy—seven years—lends particular significance to any activity, as a subsequent transfer towards an exchange would fundamentally alter the market's interpretation and could signal impending profit-taking.
Concurrently, the broader Ethereum market is striving for stabilization, attempting to hold above the $1,913 mark after successfully recovering from its June and July lows of $1,550. On the daily chart, ETH is currently challenging a more significant moving-average resistance level around $1,923, while simultaneously maintaining its position above shorter moving averages located near $1,874 and $1,802. Market momentum has also shown improvement, with the daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovering around 56, indicating that ETH remains in neutral territory without entering overbought conditions.
The immediate technical focus for Ethereum lies in the $1,920–$2,000 range. A definitive breakout and confirmed move above $2,000 would significantly bolster the recovery structure, potentially bringing the long-term moving average at $2,145 into play as the next target. Conversely, should ETH face rejection at current resistance levels, key primary support levels are established at $1,875 and $1,800. Thus, while the ancient whale's recent MKR transfer is currently perceived more as an on-chain warning signal, its ultimate impact on the market, particularly whether it leads to profit-taking after seven years of inactivity, will largely depend on the next destination of the 3,510 MKR tokens.
