ALERT: Severe weather possible Monday

Published 1 month ago1 minute read

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – It appears that March is going out like a lion after all. There is a good chance that many of us will experience severe weather in the Twin Tiers Monday afternoon, the last day of the month.

The Storm Prediction Center has part of our area under a slight or marginal risk for severe thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. This means that the oncoming weather system causing this weather, will likely cause travel disruptions starting in the early afternoon hours after 2pm and then continuing into the evening before dissipating.

The main threats are heavy downpours which could cause minor flooding, lots of cloud-to-ground lightning, and winds over 50mph which could cause power outages. We can never rule out a small tornadic spin up, though the chances of that are unlikely.

Please remember that when thunder roars, go indoors. If you can hear thunder you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning.
