April blizzard? Here's your forecast
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – April fools, but the first day of April sunshine is no joke!
No snow , but a strong cold front moves through the Tiers this evening with a few isolated thunderstorms mainly in our southernmost areas of the viewing area like in Tioga County. However, even that isn’t definite. The heating of the day was kept down thanks to the cloud cover we had all day. Another system is on the way by midweek and we could hear a few claps of thunder.
Temperatures are colder overnight as the front passes. So with that, Tuesday’s highs behind the front will end up being 20 to 30 degrees cooler than today’s. Another warm-up is expected later in the week and there is also another chance for general thunderstorms on Thursday in advance of the next front.
Post-frontal cold air keeps us on the cool side, to near or slightly below average for early April, with highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s. Northerly winds become more brisk through the first day of April at 15 to 25 mph by late afternoon. Not quite at advisory thresholds yet, but it may be a close call. The wind also dries out the ground fuels that cause wildfires so keep that in mind before the next rainfall.
